Title: Ohio State Program for Students Interested in Foreign Languages
Body: From http://www.ling.ohio-state.edu/sliys The Ohio State University Department of Linguistics is proud to announce the 2010 Summer Linguistic Institute for Youth Scholars (SLIYS), a weeklong summer event taking place on OSU’s main campus in Columbus. The SLIYS program is designed for high school students interested in the study of language. By discovering more about the way that language works, we believe that participants will become better students of language. We have developed an exciting program filled with activities that will teach students how to make “exotic” sounds from other languages; why people speak with foreign accents; how to avoid typical errors that may make their speech sound non-native; the various ways that cultural differences are expressed in language; and how languages differ in terms of sounds, writing systems, and the meaning and structure of words and sentences. Students who wish to apply to the program can obtain an application and teacher recommendation form from the SLIYS website, http://linguistics.osu.edu/SLIYS. The priority deadline for applications is March 31, 2010. Need-based financial assistance is available. Note that they will also be offering a weeklong program for teachers, Linguistic Institute for Language Teachers (LILT). Information about that program will be available soon.

Title: The 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, Part 2
Body: Here are more resources for using the Olympic and Paralympic Games in your classroom: --- French teachers especially will enjoy the web search that FLTEACH user D. Blaz has created: http://trackstar.4teachers.org/trackstar/ts/viewTrack.do?number=95162 . She also offers the following suggestions: I have students pick a sport, and look up terminology, phrases....and pick an athlete from a French-speaking country and follow their success. Each one also sends "his/her" athlete a message of encouragement (and we are, of course, delighted when someone actually gets a reply!!! Some of the lesser-known athletes are so happy to hear from someone that they do reply.) We also try to watch the coverage on TF1. Blaz, D. Re: [FLTEACH] using the Olympic games in class. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 9 Jan 2010). --- Here are two Olympics and Paralympics resources from the LangCanada portal: Programme olympique canadien d'école — Le Programme scolaire olympique canadien, présenté par RBC, encourage les élèves à participer au mouvement olympique. Two pages of general resources for the Games, mostly to do with French: http://caslt.org/resources/general/classroom-resource-links-holidays-olympics1_en.php and http://caslt.org/resources/general/classroom-resource-links-holidays-olympics2_en.php --- Download free worksheets in English (http://foreignlanguagehouse.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=cc268e773f00a6210f0b7191c&id=431711d64a&e=2ca3a74e97 ), French (http://foreignlanguagehouse.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=cc268e773f00a6210f0b7191c&id=b522a29064&e=2ca3a74e97 ), or Spanish (http://foreignlanguagehouse.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=cc268e773f00a6210f0b7191c&id=c3a95ace6f&e=2ca3a74e97 ) from Foreign Language House. --- Here are some Olympics links to activities with lesson plans suggested by a NYSTESOL listserv contributor: Canadian Olympic School Program http://www.olympicschool.ca/default.aspx?PageID=1003&LangID=en The Olympics http://olc.spsd.sk.ca/de/resources/olympics/ Preschool Olympic Activities http://www.first-school.ws/activities/firststeps/Olympics.htm 2002 Winter Olympics Lesson Plans http://www.edgate.com/wintergames/design/lesson_plans/index.html Winter Olympic Games Research Project (High School) http://www.pecentral.org/lessonideas/ViewLesson.asp?ID=828 Schrodk, K. Title: Book: Encounters in Adult Second-Language Learning
Body: From http://www.peterlang.com/Index.cfm?vLang=E&vSiteID=4&vSiteName=BookDetail.cfm&VID=430017 The Dance of Learning: On Encounters in Adult Second-Language Learning by Jeannette Regan Peter Lang Publishing Group Summary: This study uses action research and action learning to deepen the author's understanding and praxis. 'Vignettes', recollections of previous experience, are the author's windows on more than twenty-five years as an adult learner of languages and as an English teacher for non-native adults, primarily academics. The vignettes validate ordinary pedagogical acts and introduce spiritual and physical dimensions to language learning that are commonly overlooked. The process of reflection leads to an emerging awareness of «crisscross scholars» - the increasingly common breed of academic who is multilingual, multicultural, and multidisciplinary.
