Title: Utah Educators Sign Agreement with France
Body: From http://www.sltrib.com/education/ci_14265745 Utah educators sign agreement with France Schools » State hopes to exchange teachers with France By Lisa Schencker January 25, 2010 Teacher Elisabeth Wignacourt is one of three teachers from France that the French government is paying to work in Utah schools as part of the state's dual-immersion program this year. And Monday, Utah education leaders signed an agreement with French officials to continue the cooperation in hopes of bringing more French teachers here from France and eventually sending Utah teachers there to teach English. In all, 25 Utah schools now have state-funded dual-immersion programs, including the schools where the three teachers from France work, said Gregg Roberts, a world languages specialist at the State Office of Education. Typically starting in first grade, students in the programs spend half their day with a teacher who speaks English and the other half with a teacher who speaks either French, Mandarin or Spanish. Roberts said dual-immersion language programs will expand to 14 more schools this fall. Read the full article at http://www.sltrib.com/education/ci_14265745

Title: Charter Schools Recruit English Language Learners
Body: From http://www.boston.com/news/education/k_12/articles/2010/01/30/charter_schools_start_recruiting_drive City’s 14 institutions make concerted effort to attract more English language learners By James Vaznis January 20, 2010 More than 150 teachers, parents, and advocates are launching an aggressive drive today in Boston to recruit immigrant families to their charter schools in an attempt to reverse woefully low enrollment of students who are not fluent in English. They will be canvassing neighborhoods with large immigrant populations, handing out fliers printed in Spanish, Chinese, Haitian Creole, and Portuguese, as well as distributing applications. The recruitment drive represents the first coordinated effort among the city’s 14 charter schools to attract more English language learners, a group that has among the lowest achievement rates across the state and that some charter school leaders acknowledge they have not done a good enough job trying to recruit.
