Title: Mini-Conference: A Dialogue between ESL Instructors in Secondary and Higher Education Settings
Body: The NYS TESOL Special Interests Group for Higher Education and Regions Committee Present "Bridging the Gap III: A Dialogue between ESL Instructors in Secondary and Higher Education Settings" Saturday, February 27, 2010 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm Pace University, New York City This mini-conference will explore curriculum issues within secondary school and higher ed composition classes. We aim to create an informal setting within which to exchange knowledge so that secondary education teachers and their counterparts in the college composition classrooms increase their awareness regarding content and expectations within their educational settings. Specifically, we will compare and contrast curriculum content and assignments in order to assist our students to bridge the gap between secondary and college composition expectations. The conference will consist of presentations by representatives of secondary school and college composition settings, along with time allotted for break-out groups to exchange assignments and engage in smaller discussion forums: · 1:00 – 1:30: Registration · 1:30 – 3:00: Presentations Victoria Pilotti, ESL Teacher, Jamaica High School, Jamaica, NY, will discuss preparing ELLs for the NYS Regents Comprehensive English Examination. Dafna Ben-Anath, ESL Lecturer, English Composition, Pace University, New York, NY, will discuss curriculum content, writing assignments and requirements of composition courses. · 3:00 – 3:45: Small Group Discussions · 3:45 – 4:30: General Wrap-up Discussion Light Refreshments will be served. Title: Ohio Global Institute 2010
Body: Ohio Global Institute 2010 Applications are now available for the Ohio Global Institute which will be held August 3-5, 2010 at The Ohio State University. Teachers from Ohio schools who teach English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, fine arts, world languages, career programs or technology in grades K-12 may apply. One hundred teachers will be chosen with priority given to school teams. The application deadline is March 20, 2010. This three-day Global Institute for teachers in grades K-12 is a collaboration among the Ohio Department of Education, the Office of International Affairs, the Wexner Center for the Arts and Area Studies Centers at The Ohio State University, the Gerald H. Read Center at Kent State University and the Ohio Geographic Alliance. Primarily funded by a grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation and contributions from the partner organizations, this event will provide teachers of content areas across the curriculum the opportunity to: 1. Share best practices in international education. 2. Obtain new resources and tools for internationalizing across the curriculum. 3. Develop an action plan for implementation in their classroom and school. Each selected participant will be charged a $100 registration fee to offset the cost of food. Body: NEW YORK UNIVERSITY Language Lecturer in Hindi Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Faculty of Arts and Science The Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at New York University invites applications for a Language Lecturer position in Hindi, to begin September 1, 2010, pending administrative and budgetary approval. The teaching load is three courses per semester. Experience of teaching Hindi as a foreign language at the university level, familiarity with proficiency-based language teaching and testing methods, native or near native command of Hindi, ability to teach all levels, and familiarity with the use of technology in language teaching are required. A Ph.D. in Hindi language, linguistics, literature or a related field is preferred.
