TitleOhio State Program for Students Interested in Foreign Languages

The Ohio State University Department of Linguistics is proud to announce the 2010 Summer Linguistic Institute for Youth Scholars (SLIYS), a weeklong summer event taking place on OSU’s main campus in Columbus. The SLIYS program is designed for high school students interested in the study of language. By discovering more about the way that language works, we believe that participants will become better students of language. We have developed an exciting program filled with activities that will teach students how to make “exotic” sounds from other languages; why people speak with foreign accents; how to avoid typical errors that may make their speech sound non-native; the various ways that cultural differences are expressed in language; and how languages differ in terms of sounds, writing systems, and the meaning and structure of words and sentences.

Students who wish to apply to the program can obtain an application and teacher recommendation form from the SLIYS website, http://linguistics.osu.edu/SLIYS. The priority deadline for applications is March 31, 2010. Need-based financial assistance is available.

Note that they will also be offering a weeklong program for teachers, Linguistic Institute for Language Teachers (LILT). Information about that program will be available soon.
