Title: Call for Presenters for the 2010 Miami University Conference on the Teaching of Languages
Body: The Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Teacher Education Department at Miami University invite teachers of all foreign languages to present at its 2010 Miami University Conference on the Teaching of Languages. The conference will take place on Friday, October 15, 2010 at The Miami University Voice of America Learning Center located in West Chester, Ohio. The organizers are seeking presenters who can offer direction and practical ideas for experienced or new language educators to use in their classrooms. Come share your experiences, solutions, successes, and what you learned from your failures in the foreign language classroom. If you are interested in presenting at the conference, please submit a one to two paragraph summary of your presentation by April 17, 2010. Submissions may be sent via e-mail to Nohelia Rojas-Miesse at miessena@muohio.edu. Please attach your summary to the e-mail message as a Microsoft Word document or PDF. You will be notified regarding acceptance by May 20, 2010. Presenters must submit their session handouts no later than September 15, 2010, for distribution to all conference attendees in electronic form. Presenters serve on a contributing basis, are required to register for the conference and pay for the reduced presenter rate of $25. Presenters are not reimbursed for lodging or travel. Body: The spring issue of Idiom is in the planning stages. You can be a part of an upcoming issue so why not submit an article for consideration. You do not have to be a NYS TESOL member to submit an article. However, if you would like to join this professional organization go to http://www.nystesol.org/membership.html . The upcoming Idiom themes and submission guidelines are listed below. # The theme for the spring 2010 issue of Idiom is, "Addressing Inequalities.” The deadline is March 1, 2010. # The theme for the summer 2010 issue of Idiom is, "Aiming Higher." The deadline is May 15, 2010. # The theme for the fall 2010 issue of Idiom is, "New Insights." The deadline is August 15, 2010. Submission Guidelines The editors welcome articles as well as reactions to articles. Title: TPRS Graduate Course
Body: TPRS Graduate Course for teachers who would like to use TPRS with students of all ages and levels! Instructor: Elizabeth Hughes Location: Columbia, South Carolina Dates: June 14 – 17, June 21 and August 2, 2010 Cost: $125.00 for 3 hours of graduate/recertification credit and course materials Registration: Please email Nancy Williams at nwilliam@lex5.k12.sc.us, and she will gladly assist you with registration. Course Description: Learn how to incorporate TPRS into YOUR classrooms immediately. There will be purposeful instruction on the Three Steps, along with many skills necessary to make TPRS work in any classroom, regardless of which level. The first few days will be focused on discussing and practicing the skills and strategies, while the last two days and the post-workshop work will be focused on the creation of stories and lessons that can be used at the start of the year. We will discuss how extended readings can be used to drive the curriculum. At the end of the course, each teacher will have enough extended readings to last 17-25 hours of contact time. TPRS is fun and effective, and it can work for you! About the Instructor: Elizabeth Hughes has been an elementary TPRS teacher for five years. She has attended TPRS conferences held by Blaine Ray and Karen Rowan. She has also observed Ben Slavic and has taken classes from Karen Rowan, Carol Gaab, Linda Li, Blaine Ray and Donna Tatum-Johns. She has been a member and has read the TPRS list for five years and has been an active reader of Ben Slavic's blog for three years. Elizabeth has aided in the creation of two TPRS curriculums with a team of phenomenal world language teachers in Colorado that uses TPRS exclusively. She has an immense knowledge of TPRS, and she will share it with YOU during this course! Pre-Institute Work: 10 hours of independent preparation, as assigned by the course Instructor, and must be completed prior to the first day of class. Meeting Times: Monday, June 14 – Thursday, June 17 & Monday, June 21; 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM Post-Institute class date: Monday, August 2, 9:00 AM – 11:30 AM Site: Exact location will be sent to all registered participants as soon as it has been finalized. Course Credit: Attendance is mandatory for the full 45 hours of the course and will earn 60 recertification points under Option 1 of the SC Certificate Renewal Plan, Renewal Credit Matrix. Each participant will receive 3 hours of graduate credit from Coastal Carolina University upon completion of the CCU Registration Form and satisfactory completion of the course.
