Body:

Last year (http://caslsintercom.uoregon.edu/content/24238) we noted a collection of resources from CEAUTHRES for La Lotería Navideña, based largely around the emotional video advertisements for the year's lottery. The ad for the 2018 lottery has just come out; access it at https://youtu.be/NgP_b8Ax_3g

Here are some teaching resources and ideas to accompany a unit on this yearly event at http://www.ceauthres.com/2018/11/la-loteria-navidena-otra-vez.html, http://www.ceauthres.com/2018/11/novice-and-intermediate-unit-la-loteria.html, http://www.ceauthres.com/2018/11/bvp-style-task-talk-for-la-loteria.html, and http://www.ceauthres.com/2018/11/la-loteria-dreaming-spanish-edpuzzle.html

Title: Either.io as a Conversation Tool in English
Body:

Either.io is a simple site where users choose between two options. The overall percentages of votes for each option is also shown. The site is available at http://either.io/

On the TEFL Geek website, you can read suggestions for using this tool in class as a conversation prompt: https://teflgeek.net/2018/11/05/great-site-for-conversation-classes/

Note that not all of the choices on either.io are appropriate for all class contexts; you should pre-screen them as a teacher.

Title: TED Talks for English Learners
Body:

From http://blog.tesol.org/video-for-elt-episode-1-ted-talks/

Greg Kessler writes, "There are many engaging ways to use video and video creation projects in teaching English. There are also, of course, numerous videos online that can be useful in various English teaching contexts. Video streaming sites such as Vimeo and YouTube provide access to a seemingly endless supply of video content, but this can quickly result in the sensation of being overwhelmed and leave teachers uncertain of where to begin.

"Fortunately, the most useful and valuable of these video collections are intentionally archived and curated for instructional purposes. These often benefit from inclusion of a focus on specific topics, lesson types, language levels, and teaching contexts. Increasingly, there are collections of such media accompanied by extensive documentation to support implementation or even teachers’ manuals and lesson plans."

Read on for the first of a series about video applications, this one focused on sites that curate TED talks: TEDxESL, Learn English with TED Talks, and TEDEd Lessons: http://blog.tesol.org/video-for-elt-episode-1-ted-talks/

From https://www.edutopia.org/article/strengthening-bonds-between-students

Last month (http://caslsintercom.uoregon.edu/content/25765), we featured an article by Keli Yerian about the importance of gesture for language learning. In this recent Edutopia article, Jessica Hockett and Kristina Doubet recommend using shared social or physical gestures called Group Salutes to cultivate community in classrooms. Title: Inclusive Pedagogy and the Language-Learning Classroom
Body:

From https://blog.coerll.utexas.edu

Sarah Le Pichon, a PhD student in French Studies, has written a concise but idea-packed article about inclusive pedagogy in language classrooms: how to make all of your students comfortable in your class, including trans- and gender non-conforming students and students with different races and identities. Although the context she uses in her example is post-secondary, her considerations are good to think about for any teaching context.

Title: Copyright, Fair Use, and Teachers
Body:

From https://musicuentos.com

Sara-Elizabeth Cottrell has done a lot of personal research along with reflection on her own and other teachers' behavior around others' materials. Read her recent blog post for thoughtful reflection on why you should pay for another copy of that copyrighted book instead of photocopying it for a new student, the problem of harvesting song lyrics off the Internet for your activity packet, and the murkiness of Fair Use: https://musicuentos.com/2018/11/teacher-copyright-fair-use/
