Title: ACTFL 2018: Where Language Educators Meet
Body:

We had a wonderful time at this year’s ACTFL in New Orleans, and we hope you did as well. The energy, excitement, and conversations will help carry us through this academic year.

Similar to last year, the Title VI Language Resource Centers hosted a joint pavilion to showcase the curricular materials, assessments, professional development opportunities, and research of all sixteen centers.

“The joint LRC pavilion was a one-stop spot for attendees to find quality resources and materials,” says CASLS Director and LRC Coordinating Council Chairperson Julie Sykes. “It was also the perfect opportunity to showcase the collaborative work among the LRCs.”

Congratulations to Rebecca Aubrey, a Spanish teacher at Ashford School in Connecticut, who received the 2019 ACTFL Teacher of the Year Award.

Thanks to all of those who introduced themselves and met with us during the convention. We love listening to your ideas and hope to see you next year!

Examining Young Learners: Research and Practice in Assessing the English of School-age Learners
By Szilvia Papp, Shelagh Rixon, Nick Saville, and Cyril J. Weir
Published by Cambridge University Press

The volume reflects on how learners' L2 development between the ages of 6 and 16 can be coherently described and their L2 assessment defined in terms of socio-cognitive validity. There is particular focus on the theoretical foundations, language competence model, development and validation framework, and evaluation and review processes to provide evidence for the validity of the Cambridge English family of assessments for children and teenagers. Academics, assessment professionals and postgraduate researchers of L2 development in children and teenagers will find great value in the volume's theoretical insight, while policy-makers and teachers will gain rigorous practical advice for the young language learner's classroom and assessment.

From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781788921756

English as a Lingua Franca for EFL Contexts
Edited by Nicos C. Sifakis and Natasha Tsantila
Published by Multilingual Matters

This book explores the interfaces of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) pedagogy. It presents the theoretical aspects of ELF, discusses issues and challenges that ELF raises for the EFL classroom, and demonstrates how EFL practitioners can make use of ELF theorizing for classroom instruction, teacher education, developing language learning materials, policymaking and testing and assessment. Accounts of innovative and practical pedagogical practices and researchers’ insights from diverse geographical, cultural and institutional contexts will inform and inspire EFL practitioners to reconsider their practices and adopt new techniques in order to meet their learners’ diverse communicative needs in international contexts.

Title: Call for Abstracts: Arabic Heritage Education
Body:

From https://www.qatar.georgetown.edu/faculty/arabic-events

The Fourth Georgetown-Qatar Arabic Program Symposium
Arabic Heritage Education: Pedagogy, Challenges, and Prospects
Doha, April 24-25, 2019

Over the past 10 years the Arabic program at Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) has been predominantly involved in defining, articulating, and offering a separate track in Arabic language, culture, and literature introduced as Heritage Arabic. This track targets students of Arab descent, who have a connection to Arabic culture but whose pre-college language of instruction is not Arabic. While speaking one Arabic dialect fluently, these students have limited exposure to Modern Standard Arabic, which usually influences their competency in reading and writing skills. Constituting the majority of our Arabic students at GU-Q, these students often graduate from international high schools in the Arab world, but can also be identified among Arab communities living outside the Arab world. This symposium seeks to address significant aspects of heritage Arabic education. It aspires to provide a platform for sharing and discussing key issues in this field. Given the recent recognition of this separate track in Arabic learning, much needs to be done in terms of research, course preparation, and material development. Participants are expected to share their research on heritage Arabic education, whether in the Arab world or elsewhere. Suggested themes of the symposium are:

● Heritage Arabic: Concepts and Definitions
● Heritage Arabic Learners in the Arab world
● Heritage Arabic: East and West
● Acquisition of Arabic as a Heritage Language
● Teaching Literature for Heritage Learners
● Arabic: Native vs. Heritage
● Heritage vs Bilingualism
● Linguistic Features of Heritage Learners
● Curriculum Development
● Heritage Learners: Challenges and Struggles
● Curriculum: Content-based vs. Skill-based
● Proficiency and Assessment

The deadline for abstracts is December 10, 2018.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

The Eleventh International Conference on Language Teacher Education welcomes proposals for papers and symposia on all aspects of the education and professional development of language teachers.
