Title: Webinar: A Tiered Approach to Assessment
Body:

From http://iallt.org/webinars/11-28-18/

UCLA language programs have begun to use a tiered approach to assessment, where assessment is considered more as an overall package than just a specific individual activity. By matching smaller “micro” assessments directly against a specific learning objective or outcome, students work can be assessed in a clear, formative manner. Later, these “micro” assessments are combined with others to create a full summative assessment of the student.

Presenter: Tom Garbelotti, UCLA
Date: Wednesday, November 28, 2018
Time: 11:00am PST / 12:00pm MST / 1:00pm CST / 2:00pm EST

Title: Digitization Provides Access to Native American Archives
Body:

From http://newsbreaks.infotoday.com/NewsBreaks/Digitization-Provides-Access-to-Native-American-Archives-128497.asp

In this article by Nancy K. Herther, you will read about digitization and the development of web-based primary source materials that have flourished in the past ten years, specifically in the area of Native American Studies, in which the lack of easy availability to materials and resources has made the collection and use of key documents, histories, and language materials difficult. The article also provides links to a number of online web-based resources that contain information about many projects on Native American perspectives and knowledge.

Title: Arabic Lecture Series: Presentations in Arabic
Body:

From https://sites.google.com/site/arabiclectureseries/about

The Arabic Lecture Series is a compilation of presentations made by native Arabic speakers and non-natives with high levels of proficiency. They cover a range of topics of cultural interest to the speaker and the original audience.

These lectures were intended for intermediate level language learners but not to provide intermediate level language. That is, they are intended to challenge 2nd and 3rd year university level Arabic students. They are not intended to be fully comprehensible, but intermediate listeners should be able to get the gist of the lecture. Some key vocabulary is provided in the lecture notes to make the lecture more accessible, and other vocabulary are provided as glosses in the videos themselves.

Title: Visual Representations of Spanish and French
Body:

Pictotraductor is a website that converts Spanish sentences into a visual representation of most of the words. This could be helpful when asking students to recall particular sentences or the elements of a story.

Rebus-o-matic similarly converts French sentences into rebuses. These are different from the visual representations at the Pictotraductor site; many words use a "sound-alike" image plus additional letters and numbers to complete the meaning. They are a form of puzzle rather than an actual visual representation of the sentence.

Both sites could be used to create puzzles that serve as a nice warmup or sponge activity when students enter the classroom; a nice extension activity would be to ask students to create their own puzzles.

Pictotraductor is available at https://www.pictotraductor.com/
