Title: TESOL Virtual Seminar: Improving English-Medium Instruction on EFL University Campuses
Body: From http://www.tesol.org/s_tesol/sec_document.asp?CID=1426&DID=12599 Improving English-Medium Instruction on EFL University Campuses, from the Bottom-Up & the Top-Down Joyce Kling and Kara Mac Donald Thursday, October 1, 2009, 9:00 am – 10:30 am Eastern Daylight Time The number of English-medium instruction (EMI) courses taught at universities in EFL contexts has risen dramatically over the past decade. Investigation as to best practice and the effects of EMI has followed suit. While many are working to build a basis for integrating content and language in EFL higher education, most programs at non–traditionally English speaking universities are conducted parallel to their national language-medium courses as equal and equivalent options for students from all over the world. The presenters discuss their experience regarding EFL universities’ reaction to language policies and preparedness in terms of quality assurances and training of content lecturers. Learn more about this virtual seminar and register at http://www.tesol.org/s_tesol/sec_document.asp?CID=1426&DID=12599

Title: World Oral Literature Project
Body: From http://www.oralliterature.org The World Oral Literature Project is an urgent global initiative to document and make accessible endangered oral literatures before they disappear without record. The first phase of the World Oral Literature Project provides small grants to fund the collecting of oral literature, with a particular focus on the peoples of Asia and the Pacific, and on areas of cultural disturbance. In addition, the project will host training workshops for grant recipients. Established at the University of Cambridge in 2009, the project aspires to become a permanent centre for the appreciation and preservation of oral literature and collaborate with local communities to document their own oral narratives. The World Oral Literature Project will also publish a library of oral texts and occasional papers, and make the collections accessible through new media platforms. There is no application form and no deadline for the Supplemental Grants Programme - proposals are evaluated on a rolling basis year-round. Learn more about the grants at http://www.oralliterature.org/grants/grants.html . Visit the World Oral Literature Project website at http://www.oralliterature.org

Title: Article: Unraveling How Children Become Bilingual So Easily
Body: From http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_med_healthbeat_bilingual_tots Unraveling how children become bilingual so easily By LAURAN NEERGAARD July 21, 2009 New research is showing just how children's brains can become bilingual so easily, findings that scientists hope eventually could help the rest of us learn a new language a bit easier. It's remarkable that babies being raised bilingual — by simply speaking to them in two languages — can learn both in the time it takes most babies to learn one. On average, monolingual and bilingual babies start talking around age 1 and can say about 50 words by 18 months. What might help people who missed their childhood window? Baby brains need personal interaction to soak in a new language — TV or CDs alone don't work. So researchers are improving the technology that adults tend to use for language learning, to make it more social and possibly tap brain circuitry that tots would use. Title: Wiz World Online: A Virtual Game to Teach Children Languages
Body: From http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/16/a-virtual-game-to-teach-children-languages A Virtual Game to Teach Children Languages By Claire Cain Miller July 16, 2009 Wiz World Online, developed by 8D World, a start-up based in Shanghai, China, and Woburn, Mass., was built by Rick Goodman, who developed the popular games Age of Empires and Empire Earth. In his latest virtual world, instead of re-enacting historical battles, Chinese children can learn English. Kids choose an avatar and pick a scene, like a castle in a fantasy land or a supermarket in the United States. They are confronted with challenges, like dodging flying monsters or buying fruit, all of which ask them to use English. If they hit a ceiling in their language capabilities, they go to the wizards’ library and read so-called magical books that teach them lessons. The company is initially focusing on kids age 7 to 12 in China but plans to expand globally, eventually teaching many different languages to kids all over the world.
