Title: Call for Papers: 44th International Conference on Salish and Neighboring Languages
Body: The 44th International Conference on Salish and Neighboring Languages will be co-hosted by The University of Montana Linguistics Program and The Salish Kootenai College Native American Language Teacher Training Institute. The conference will take place August 3-5, 2009 with events in both Missoula and Pablo, Montana. Details regarding locations, accommodation, registration, etc. will be circulated in April. Papers on all aspects of the study, preservation, and teaching of Salish and neighboring languages are welcome. Abstract guidelines: abstracts should be 150-200 words and should include the paper title, author(s), affiliation, and e-mail address. Abstracts should be sent by e-mail to ICSNL44@umontana.edu as a pdf attachment. If you anticipate any problems sending your abstract in this way, please contact the organizing committee. Please include the primary authors snail mail address and phone number in your e-mail. Deadline for receipt of abstracts is June 15, 2009. The program will be announced early July. Following recent changes in the structure of ICSNL conferences, papers will be published after the conference as a University of British Columbia Working Papers in Linguistics (UBCWPL) proceedings volume (and not as preprints as had been done in the past). Details regarding the submission of papers will be available at the conference. The deadline for completed papers will be mid-October. Questions about the conference can be forwarded to Penfield, S. Title: 1st Annual Ohio University CALL Conference
Body: From http://sites.google.com/site/oucallconference/Home Students and faculty from the Ohio University Linguistics Department created a CALL practice and research group a little over a year ago. One of the goals of this group was to host a small free annual conference. The first such event will happen on May 1st on the Ohio University campus in Athens, Ohio. The conference is from 9 AM to 5 PM and includes a small collection of invited talks and workshops. Dr. Philip Hubbard of Stanford University will be the keynote speaker. Title: 2009 International Summer Institute: Music in Many Languages
Body: From http://www.i2i.uiuc.edu/2009_institute 2009 International Summer Institute Music in Many Languages with special guest Mary Goetze June 14-19, 2009 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign This intensive institute will address ways of incorporating less-commonly taught languages (languages other than Spanish, French and German) and cultures into the classroom, with special emphasis on the elementary general music classroom. Languages will include Chinese, Arabic, Bulgarian, Zulu, and Portuguese (tentative). For each language, institute participants will participate in sessions covering basic language pronunciation, culture, and songs that might be used in the classroom. Sessions on implementation and lesson plan development will provide participants with concrete ways to use their newly-acquired skills. While all K-14 teachers are welcome, the curriculum materials are geared mainly towards elementary general music teachers. Social studies/social science teachers, particularly those teaching history, geography, sociology, and world cultures, may also find it useful. Teachers will receive a CD with the pronunciation of song lyrics as well as other pedagogical materials. Deadline for early applications is April 17, 2009.
