Title: ESL Article: Finding the Language to Teach Science
Body: From http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2008/10/01/06science_ep.h28.html?tmp=1920869798 Finding the Language to Teach Science By Sean Cavanagh October 1, 2008 Martina Perez is one of more than 400 educators in the Miami-Dade County, Fla., school system taking part in a professional-development and curriculum program that attempts to build students’ science knowledge while also helping them master English. Developed by researchers at the University of Miami, the Promoting Science among English Language Learners program, or P-SELL, addresses a number of the crucial challenges facing elementary teachers in urban districts and other communities that have seen an influx of non-native English-speakers. Ms. Perez, like all participating P-SELL teachers, attended three years of professional-development workshops. Those sessions focused on improving teachers’ science understanding, and showed them how different activities, such as hands-on experiments, small-group discussions, and writing, can improve students’ knowledge of both science and English. Title: The World of Language Testing on the Web
Body: From http://www.le.ac.uk/education/testing/ltrfile/ltrframe.html Since 1995 this online collection of resources has been updated regularly at 2 - 4 monthly intervals. Its purpose is to act as a reference guide to language testing related resources on the Internet. At this site you will find all the links which have been collected to date, and each one is reviewed in the Language Tester's Guide to Cyberspace. Instead of randomly visiting sites, you can select those which are most likely to provide the information you are looking for. There is also the Language Testing Database button, which leads to a searchable index of articles published in the journal Language Testing. The Conference News page was added in 1996, and the Articles and Reviews section in 1997. In 1999 the Video FAQs was also added under the ILTA pages, following a project to provide introductory information on this discipline free of charge on the web. Although the videos are copyright to ILTA anyone may link to them. Visit this website at http://www.le.ac.uk/education/testing/ltr.html .

Title: New Book: China in the World
Body: From http://www.cheng-tsui.com/store/products/china_world?utm_source=global%2Bed&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=China%2Bin%2Bthe%2BWorld China in the World: A History Since 1644 Edited by the Curriculum Specialists at Primary Source, Inc. Published by Cheng & Tsui Summary: China in the World (book and CD-ROM set) explores China’s captivating history through engrossing historical narrative and hundreds of primary sources. Unit overviews, introductory essays, and time lines provide the context for appreciating the events and implications of China’s complex history. A wealth of primary sources—imperial edicts, sea captains’ letters, short stories, poetry, essays, posters, photographs, and cartoons—allows students to explore events from multiple perspectives and through many genres. Primary source-based activities foster analytical thinking, hone verbal skills, and ask students to consider history as a complicated, messy, and fascinating subject. Written by teachers for teachers and students, China in the World serves as a perfect companion to standard world history texts and courses in world literature. It is also ideal for courses on East Asian studies, the history of China, or Chinese language and culture at the high school and college level. The emphasis on document analysis makes it an especially valuable resource for AP* or IB® courses. The dual-platform CD includes hundreds of full-length documents, full-color images, maps, a bibliography, a glossary, and more, for convenient reference in the classroom or at home. Title: Book: Bilingualism and Identity: Spanish at the Crossroads with Other Languages
Body: From http://www.benjamins.com/cgi-bin/t_bookview.cgi?bookid=SiBil%2037 Bilingualism and Identity Spanish at the crossroads with other languages Edited by Mercedes Niño-Murcia and Jason Rothman Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company Summary: Sociolinguists have been pursuing connections between language and identity for several decades. But how are language and identity related in bilingualism and multilingualism? Mobilizing the most current methodology, this collection presents new research on language identity and bilingualism in three regions where Spanish coexists with other languages. The cases are Spanish-English contact in the United States, Spanish-indigenous language contact in Latin America, and Spanish-regional language contact in Spain. This is the first comparativist book to examine language and identity construction among bi- or multilingual speakers while keeping one of the languages constant. The sociolinguistic standing of Spanish varies among the three regions depending whether or not it is a language of prestige. Comparisons therefore afford a strong constructivist perspective on how linguistic ideologies affect bi/multilingual identity formation.
