Title: Book: Raising a Bilingual Child
Body: From http://www.randomhouse.com Raising a Bilingual Child By Barbara Zurer Pearson and Living Language Publisher: Random House, Inc. Summary: Raising a Bilingual Child provides parents with information, encouragement, and practical advice for creating a positive bilingual environment. It offers both an overview of why parents should raise their children to speak more than one language and detailed steps parents can take to integrate two languages into their child’s daily routine. Raising a Bilingual Child also includes inspirational first-hand accounts from parents. It dispels the myth that bilingualism may hinder a child’s academic performance and explains that learning languages at a young age can actually enhance a child’s overall intellectual development. Title: Call for Papers: Ninth Conference on Distinguished Language Studies
Body: Ninth Conference on Distinguished Language Studies (CDLC) Linthicum, Maryland December 6-7, 2008 The Coalition of Distinguished Language Centers, the only international organization dedicated to research and application of research in the area of teaching for and achieving native-like foreign-language proficiency, will be holding its ninth international symposium at the Maritime Institute in Linthicum, Maryland (near the Thurgood Marshall Baltimore-Washington International Airport), December 6-7, 2008. Professors, researchers, and others with experience in teaching, studying, translation/interpretation, or assessment at the near-native level of proficiency in any foreign language are invited to submit a one-page abstract (exclusive of bibliography) on any aspect of language study at the distinguished level. (For those looking for a definition of “distinguished” proficiency, or ILR Level 4, descriptions can be found at www.govtilr.org). There will be several areas of focus: teaching methods and practices, language learning experiences, research reports, translation/interpretation, program development/management, and assessment (proficiency, diagnostic, dynamic, other). Papers should be planned for 25 minutes, including questions. Colloquia or panels of 3-4 presentations may also be suggested and abstracts submitted together, if desired. The working language of the conference will be English. However, presentations may be in any language, as long as there are enough presentations in that language to form a panel. Abstracts should be written in the language in which they will be presented and should be sent with an English translation of the title to the CDLC Operations Director, Boris Shekhtman, via email (sbsltc@aol.com), by no later than October 1, 2008. Abstracts will be peer-reviewed. Notification of acceptance or rejection of proposals will be made on or about October 15. Following the conference, presentations will be published in a Proceedings volume. The Maritime Institute has guest rooms that include breakfast and dinner meals for $130/day for those who care to stay there. Rooms may be reserved after the beginning of October, at which time contact information will be posted on the CDLC website. There are a number of nearby hotels serviced by a free shuttle to and from the institute. More information will be available after October 1. The latest-available information about the conference, including the program and changes to it, will be posted on the CDLC website through the opening of the conference: www.distinguishedlanguagecenters.org. Before the conference begins, an emergency number for contacting CDLC staff during the conference will be posted on the website. Please check the site from time to time. Jackson, F.
