Body: From http://www.cleveland.com/plaindealer/stories/index.ssf?/base/news/1211877009236540.xml&coll=2 Researcher works on sign language video dictionary Tuesday, May 27, 2008 Mark Pratt Boston - Even though Joan Nash has been using American Sign Language for most of her life and has made a career of teaching deaf and hearing impaired children, she is sometimes stumped when she encounters a sign she has never seen. She can't just look it up in a dictionary. At least not yet. Nash, a doctoral student at Boston University, is part of a team working on an interactive video project that would allow someone to demonstrate a sign in front of a camera, and have a computer program interpret and explain its meaning. Title: Article: Chinese in 2008: An Expanding Field
Body: From http://www.askasia.org/chinese/announcements/fieldreport.htm Although historically Chinese has not been widely taught in American schools, interest is growing dramatically. Increasingly leaders in the public and private sectors are recognizing the rise of Asia as one of the central facts of the 21st century. China, with its tremendous economic growth and emergence as a cultural and political leader, is integral to this shift. Given these changes, the task of increasing the number of American students who can speak Chinese proficiently and can demonstrate an understanding of Chinese culture is crucial. What progress has been made in the teaching of Chinese over the past three years and what are some of the challenges that need to be addressed? Read this assessment of progress and challenges at http://www.askasia.org/chinese/announcements/fieldreport.htm .
