Title: Job: Instructional Technology and Media Specialist
Body: Princeton University in Princeton, NJ is seeking an Instructional Technology and Media Specialist to help staff the Humanities Resource Center, formerly the Language Resource Center. The Humanities Resource Center houses the university video collection and language learning materials. The Center includes a computer lab, viewing rooms, and a smart classroom. The main responsibility of the position is to oversee the maintenance and circulation of the campus video collection located in the Center. This includes managing the student workers who staff the desk, responding to inquiries from patrons, and handling course reserve requests. The successful candidate will have experience working with students, employees and college/university faculty. The candidate should also have a broad knowledge of effective uses of technology, including video technologies in higher education, particularly in foreign language teaching. The candidate may also be called upon to assist in the creation of multimedia teaching materials. Some experience with website development and database management is preferred. A willingness to learn these skills is required. CORRAL and DAPHNE PATAI June 6, 2008 The business model is the larger context for understanding the recent closure of the German department at the private University of Southern California and the proposal to end German at the public Humboldt State University. In fact, what is happening to German can happen to any language — and has. From a disciplinary point of view, the abandonment of German is another sign of the sway held at present by cultural studies, which implies that art and literature do not matter unless they can be turned into surrogate politics. "Relevance" these days is understood in an extremely narrow sense. If departments of French, another endangered language, or German studied, say, minority groups in France and Germany, it is unlikely that administrators would have the courage to disperse them.
