The program begins with training in the use of the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines—Speaking (Revised 1999). The guidelines are made concrete through authentic speech samples at each level of proficiency. The MRTP then teaches users how to rate examinee performances on the Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview (SOPI), a tape-mediated test of oral proficiency. Body: From http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/newsline/archives/2008/05/new_brief_build.html New Brief: Building Collaboration between Schools and Parents of English Language Learners: Transcending Barriers, Creating Opportunities By Robin Waterman and Beth Harry National Center for Culturally Responsive Educational Systems May 2008 Summary: This brief is grounded in the perspective that parents of ELLs place a very high value on education and are involved in their children's education in important ways, such as ensuring the completion of homework, actively participating in parent-teacher conferences, and attending school-based parent meetings. Yet, some of the parents of ELLs are also limited in their ability to support their children's education as fully as they are capable of and desire. In many school contexts, school staff are also limited in their ability to welcome and include parents while working toward the shared goal of supporting ELL academic success. Barriers pertaining to language, school staffs' lack of familiarity with culturally and linguistically diverse families, and parents' unfamiliarity with U.S. schools can all impede effective parent-school collaboration. The primary goal of this brief is to discuss these barriers and offer concrete suggestions to guide school staff to transcend them. Have the students draw pictures of feelings in the box and then say then say the feeling. Pictionary Matamosca (Flyswatter)-Have pictures of the feelings on the board and call out the feeling. Students then "hit" the correct feeling. Place pictures around the room and have the students describe how each one feels. You could also incorporate cuando (when). For example, ¿Cómo estás cuando tienes un examen y no has estudiado? (How do you feel when you have a test and you haven’t studied?) Thomas, J. Re: Teaching Feelings. I then say an emotion, and the kids have to act it. I then act them out again, and kids have to tell me what I am feeling. I take digital pictures of the kids posing as different emotions (they're pretty funny!), and I use them as flashcards, and for other activities. I ask questions like 'who is sad?' and 'how is Emily?'. I describe situations (this person's hamster just died) and they have to guess who it is and how they are feeling.
