Title: Article: Plain English: Help or Hindrance?
Body: From http://www.coursecrafters.com/ELL-Outlook Plain English: Help or Hindrance? By Suzanne Irujo January/February 2008 Lately I've been seeing a lot of references to "plain English." They remind me of a movement in the 1960s to get lawyers and government agencies to speak and write so other people could understand them. The movement must have been somewhat successful, given that there is a "Plain English Foundation," which teaches people to write in plain English. It could not have been entirely successful, however, since there is also a "Plain English Campaign," which works to do away with "gobbledygook" in public communication. But, of course, this is not the kind of "plain English" that I have been reading about lately. This new usage of "plain English" is related to No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), and the equity issues that are raised by trying to assess English language learners (ELLs) in a language that they don't yet fully understand. Title: New Book: The Longitudinal Study of Advanced L2 Capacities
Body: From http://www.routledge.com/books/The-Longitudinal-Study-of-Advanced-L2-Capacities-isbn9780805861730 The Longitudinal Study of Advanced L2 Capacities By Lourdes Ortega, Heidi Byrnes Publisher: Routledge Summary: The present volume explores the connection between longitudinal study and advanced language capacities, two under-researched areas, and proposes an agenda for future research. Five chapters probe theoretical and methodological reflections about the longitudinal study of advanced L2 capacities, followed by eight chapters that report on empirical longitudinal investigations spanning descriptive, quasi-experimental, qualitative, and quantitative longitudinal methodologies. The scholars in this volume collectively make the argument that second language acquisition research will be the richer, theoretically and empirically, if a trajectory toward advancedness is part of its conceptualization right from the beginning and, in reverse, that advancedness is a particularly interesting acquisitional level at which to probe contemporary theories associated with the longitudinal study of language development. The central question explored in the present collection is: How does learning over time evolve toward advanced capacities in a second language?
