Title: Article: “German Day” at Washington and Jefferson College
Body: From http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08075/865462-85.stm Sprechen Sie Deutsch? Ja! German students celebrate the language Saturday, March 15, 2008 By Eleanor Chute More than 350 German students from 15 middle and high schools gathered Thursday at the Olin Fine Arts Center at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington County for the annual German Day, sponsored by the college's multicultural affairs office and the American Association of Teachers of German. Across the nation, enrollment in German is dwarfed by enrollment in Spanish. By the time students reach college, slightly more than half of those enrolled in college foreign language classes are studying Spanish, according to 2006 figures from the Modern Language Association. And just 6 percent are studying German, which ranks third in popularity after French. However, foreign language enrollment overall is increasing, with German posting a 3.5 percent increase since 2002, one of the lowest increases among languages. Spanish grew 10.3 percent, and Arabic had the biggest growth at 126.5 percent. Read the entire article at http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08075/865462-85.stm .
