Title: BYU Corpus of American English
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/19/19-586.html The 360+ million word ''BYU Corpus of American English'' (1990-2007), is freely available online (http://www.americancorpus.org). New texts will be added at least two times each year from this point on (20 million new words each year; 4 million words in each of the five genres), and it will thus serve as a unique linguistic history of American English since 1990. The interface is the same as the interface for the 100 million word British National Corpus and 100 million word TIME Magazine corpus (see http://corpus.byu.edu ) Due to copyright and licensing issues, the corpus is not available in full-text form. Rather, as with BYU’s interface to the BNC and TIME, all access will be via the web interface, which allows full frequency and distributional charts, and limited KWIC displays (up to 100 words per entry) . Access the corpus at http://www.americancorpus.org .

Title: New Publication: Teaching German Modal Particles
Body: Teaching German Modal Particles: A Corpus-based Approach by Nina Vyatkina and Karen E. Johnson CALPER Publications Description: Teaching German Modal Particles: A Corpus-based Approach offers an approach to the challenges of teaching the usage of modal particles to learners of German that emphasizes awareness raising activities. The worksheets and handouts are sequenced to move learners through a gradual process of inductively noticing patterns of modal particle use, to defining modal particle meanings and usages, to analyzing modal particle use in context, and finally, to deductively using modal particles in extended communicative interactions. All worksheets are followed by answer keys which offer additional explanations about appropriate modal particle usage. The materials have been created on the basis of a collection of authentic communicative computer-mediated interactions that took place between L2 learners of German and native speakers of German. Teaching German Modal Particles: A Corpus-based Approach is intended for high-intermediate and advanced levels of proficiency and can be used as supplemental materials in a variety of college/university courses.
