Title: New Report: Promoting ELL Parental Involvement: Challenges in Contested Times
Body: From http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/newsline/archives/2008/02/new_report_prom_1.html New Report: Promoting ELL Parental Involvement: Challenges in Contested Times By M. Beatriz Arias and Milagros Morillo-Campbell Education Policy Research Unit and the Education and the Public Interest Center This policy brief analyzes factors related to the implementation of effective parental involvement with English Language Learners (ELLs). Research supports the importance of parental involvement for improved student achievement, better school attendance, and reduced dropout rates regardless of socioeconomic background or ethnicity. Accordingly, and given the achievement gap between ELLs and English proficient students, it is important to identify practices that may improve ELL parental involvement and thus student achievement. This brief analyzes characteristics of the ELL student and parent population; barriers to ELL family engagement with schools; and characteristics of traditional and nontraditional parental involvement models. Title: New Book: Reflective Language Teaching
Body: From http://www.continuumbooks.com Reflective Language Teaching: From Research to Practice by Thomas S. C. Farrell Publisher: Continuum Description: The need for ongoing teacher development has been a recurring theme in the field of TESOL in recent years. Not everything a language teacher needs to know can be provided at the pre-service level, and the knowledge base of teaching is constantly changing. Based on cutting-edge research illustrated through case studies, this book outlines strategies for professional development through reflective practice in the language classroom. Accessible and comprehensive, the book presupposes no prior knowledge of linguistics or language teaching, and each chapter includes reflective discussion questions to help the reader apply the strategies and procedures discussed.
