Title: Visiting Teacher Program for Spanish and Chinese Teachers in Ohio
Body: If your Ohio district has Spanish or Chinese teaching positions to fill but doesn’t have any Ohio-licensed applicants from which to choose, please remind your district administrators about Ohio’s visiting teacher programs. Ohio signed an MOU with the government of Spain in 2006 in order to bring highly qualified teachers of Spanish to our state. A similar agreement is currently being signed with the government of Taiwan, and the teacher exchange program will be in place in time for the coming school year. These agreements enable ODE to help districts overcome the critical shortage of licensed Spanish and Chinese teachers in Ohio and meet their staffing needs by filling positions with native speakers who are trained to bring the cultures of the Spanish-speaking and Chinese-speaking worlds alive in their classrooms. Visiting Spanish and Chinese teachers are paid a regular salary and benefits by their hiring districts and can work for a period of up to three years in the U.S. under the J-1 Exchange Visitors Visa Program. Interviews for Ohio’s next group of Spanish visiting teachers will be conducted in early April. Interviews for Chinese teachers from Taiwan will be conducted later in the spring. Interested districts should contact Ryan Wertz, ODE World Languages Consultant, at 614-728-4630 or by no later than mid-March to secure additional information or to request a teacher.
