Title | Article on Teaching Vocabulary |
Body | Teaching Vocabulary By Linda Diamond and Linda Gutlohn LD OnLine, 2006 In "Teaching Vocabulary," Linda Diamond and Linda Gutlohn discuss the following components of vocabulary instruction: extensive reading, instruction of specific words, instruction in independent word-learning strategies, and word consciousness activities. They stress multiple exposures to vocabulary in different contexts and explicit instruction in word-learning strategies, such as dictionary use, morphemic analysis, and contextual analysis. The authors also suggest that drawing on cognates (when applicable) can be beneficial for ELLs. Finally, they include a lesson plan about animal idioms to illustrate how to teach word consciousness and a lesson plan that uses mnemonics for word-meaning recall. (Summary prepared by NCELA.)
