Two I have had great success with are Green Angel by Alice Hoffman and Children of The River by Linda Crew. Green Angel is a well written metaphor about 9/11. The setting takes place in a time that mixes the agricultural lifestyle of the past with concerns of teens today. The vocabulary is not complex, but the themes of dealing with loss and alienation are. Though written by an American, Children of the River resonates with my Asian high school female students. The story of a Cambodian refugee who is the voice of her family, longs to see her parents again and struggles with her love for a blue eyed boy hits home.

See Townsend Press http://www.townsendpress.com for a large collection at extremely reasonable prices. My adult Intermediate students have been enjoying the collection of stories in "Everyday Heroes."
