Rodnaya rech', Introductory Textbook for Russian Heritage Learners
By Irina Y. Dubinina and Olesya Kisselev
Published by Georgetown University Press
Rodnaya rech', an introductory textbook for heritage learners, addresses the unique needs of students who have at least Intermediate-level listening and speaking skills on the ACTFL scale but who have underdeveloped or nonexistent literacy skills. With an emphasis on conceptual understanding of vocabulary and grammar, Rodnaya rech' builds students' literacy skills and teaches them to strategically use the linguistic intuition they have gained as heritage speakers while strengthening all four skill areas.
With a textbook designed for in-class work and an electronic workbook containing all homework activities and texts for reading comprehension, Rodnaya rech' can be used as the main course material either in an intensive one-semester class or at a more measured pace over two semesters. This book is flexible enough to be used in specialized heritage or in mixed classes. It can also support independent study and learning in less formal settings, such as community schools.

Title: Three Lessons for Teachers from Grant Wiggins
Body:
From: https://jaymctighe.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Three-Lessons-from-Grant-Wiggins-1-2.pdf
We, at CASLS, find that teachers who use a backwards design process for curriculum design have positive results integrating standards, objectives, assessments, and activities. The backwards design process is based heavily on the work of Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe. In this short essay, Jay McTighe summarizes three lessons that the late Grant Wiggins emphasized: Plan Backward from Authentic Performance, Feedback is Key to Successful Learning and Performance, and Empathize with the Learner.

Title: The Language of Service Encounters
Body:
The Language of Service Encounters: A Pragmatic-Discursive Approach
By J. César Félix-Brasdefer
Published by Cambridge University Press
Service encounters are ubiquitous in social interaction. We buy food and everyday items in supermarkets, convenience stores, or markets; we purchase merchandise in department stores; or we request information at a visitor information center. This book offers a comprehensive account of service encounters in commercial and non-commercial settings. Grounded in naturally occurring face-to-face interactions and drawing on a pragmatic-discursive approach, J. César Félix-Brasdefer sets out a framework for the analysis of transactional and relational talk in various contexts in the United States and Mexico. This book investigates cross-cultural and intra-lingual pragmatic variation during the negotiation of service. The author provides a broad review of research on service encounters to date, and analyzes characteristics of sales transactions, such as participants' roles, pragmatic and discourse functions of relational talk and address forms, the realization of politeness, and changes in alignment from transactional to relational talk.

Title: Helping Students Develop Their Body Language
Body:
Fran Austin writes, "Body language has long been seen by communications specialists as a key component of the way we interact with others, with researchers claiming that anything between 50% and 80% of all communication happens through non-verbal communication.
"...So why is it that body language has such a low profile in the ELT world? It could be that we take fore-granted that body language is a transferable skill from the learners L1, but it certainly is not, though their are some shared similarities across cultures."

The Multilingual Mind: A Modular Processing Perspective
By Michael Sharwood Smith & John Truscott
Published by Cambridge University Press
Language lies at the heart of the way we think, communicate and view the world. Most people on this planet are in some sense multilingual. The Multilingual Mind explores, within a processing perspective, how languages share space and interact in our minds. The mental architecture proposed in this volume permits research across many domains in cognitive science to be integrated and explored within one explanatory framework, recasting compatible insights and findings in terms of a common set of terms and concepts. The MOGUL framework has already proven effective for shedding light on the relationship between processing and learning, metalinguistic knowledge, consciousness, optionality, crosslinguistic influence, the initial state, 'UG access', ultimate attainment, input enhancement, and even language instruction. This groundbreaking work will be essential reading for linguists working in language acquisition, multilingualism, and language processing, as well as for those working in related areas of psychology, neurology and cognitive science.
