Title: Exhibition: The Chiaroscuro Woodcut in Renaissance Italy
Body:

From http://www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/chiaroscuro-woodcut-renaissance-italy

The Chiaroscuro Woodcut in Renaissance Italy
Los Angeles County Museum of Art
June 3-September 16, 2018

Displaying exquisite designs, technical virtuosity, and sumptuous color, chiaroscuro woodcuts are among the most striking prints of the Renaissance. First introduced in Italy around 1516, the chiaroscuro woodcut, which involves printing an image from two or more woodblocks inked in different hues, was one of the most successful early forays into color printing in Europe. Taking its name from the Italian for “light” (chiaro) and “shade” (scuro), the technique creates the illusion of depth through tonal contrasts.

For this first major presentation of the subject in the United States, some 100 rare chiaroscuro woodcuts will be brought together alongside related drawings, engravings, and sculpture. With its accompanying scholarly catalogue, The Chiaroscuro Woodcut in Renaissance Italy explores the materials and means of its production, offering a fresh perspective on the remarkable art of the chiaroscuro woodcut.

For more information about this exhibition, go to http://www.lacma.org/art/exhibition/chiaroscuro-woodcut-renaissance-italy
A special lecture on this unique printing technique will be held by the LACMA exhibit's curator Naoko Takahatake on June 14; for full details go to https://iiclosangeles.esteri.it/iic_losangeles/en/gli_eventi/calendario/2018/06/i-chiaroscuro-nelle-incisioni-rincascimentali.html

Roman Tomb Unearthed; to Everyone’s Surprise, It’s Intact
By Elisabetta Povoledo
June 1, 2018

Sometimes the most extraordinary finds occur by sheer luck.

At least that was the case of a fourth century B.C. chamber tomb that came to light five weeks ago during the construction of an aqueduct in a Rome suburb, when an earthmover accidentally opened a hole in the side of the chamber.

...Archaeologists are calling it “the Tomb of the Athlete” because of the presence of two bronze strigils, the instrument used by ancient Greek and Roman athletes to scrape sweat from the skin after a workout. Actually, the male skeletons in the tomb belonged to older men (all three were over 35 — very old in those days). “To say there was an athlete is a bit of stretch, but it works journalistically,” joked Fabio Turchetta, the on-site archaeologist who followed the aqueduct works.

Title: French Restaurants May Start Offering "Doggie Bags"

'Le doggie bag,' s'il vous plaît: French restaurants may have to embrace leftovers
by Elena Berton
May 2, 2018

Diners in French bistros and cafes who want to take home leftovers are often met with bewildered looks. That could soon change with a proposed law requiring small restaurants to provide "le doggie bag" to any customer who asks.

Though doggie bags are common in the United States and Asia, where they are viewed as a compliment to the chef, Europeans often consider it gauche to take home uneaten food.

“In Paris and large cities, people tend to eat out more. But in the rest of France, food is something that is mostly consumed at home,” said Paris sociologist Anne Lhuissier. “We go to the restaurant for special occasions or as a special treat, so taking food home feels bizarre."

The practice is so unusual in this food-obsessed country that people say “le doggie bag,” because there is no equivalent term in French. The hotel and restaurant industry union UMIH tried to promote the more chic “le gourmet bag.”

Title: Using a Live Webcam in Your World Language Class
Body:

From http://elmundodepepita.blogspot.com

Julie from the Mundo de Pepita blog writes, "I am always trying to foster [spontaneous, authentic] output with my elementary students, and this year I began using LIVE WEBCAMS in earnest in my 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade Spanish classes, which turned out to be one of the most successful things I did this year and engendered a ton of student output every lesson. Last year I had started using a live cam from the Acebuche Centro de Cría in Spain, a breeding center for Iberian Lynxes ... and this year I added SEO BirdLife's live stork cam from Alcalá de Henares.

Read on for the kinds of language that you can use with your young Spanish learners to talk about what you see on the webcams each day: http://elmundodepepita.blogspot.com/2018/06/how-using-live-webcam-in-your-world.html
