Title: Call for Papers: 4th International Conference on Usage Based Perspectives on Second Language Learning
Body:

The 4th international conference Thinking, doing, learning: Usage based perspectives on second language learning will be held in the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, on June 17-19, 2019.

The aim of TDL is to advance our understanding of what it means to take a usage-based approach to L2 learning and L2 research. The organizers invite researchers to explore a wide variety of topics related to language usage, language learning, and cognition. These include questions such as what it means to interact in L2 in different social contexts, how speakers accomplish social actions in moment-to-moment sense-making activities, and what is the nature of language use environments as well as sediments of usage events left as “acquired linguistic constructions” in the individual language learner. This variety of questions involves strong, empirical and theoretical considerations of language, learning, and cognition:

• what is language – constructions or interactional competence?
• what is learning – social action or long-term portability?
• what is cognition – an individual property or a socially distributed phenomenon?, and
• what are the implications for L2 teaching?

The organizers therefore invite conference contributions that draw on epistemologies, theories, and methods from across the spectrum of usage-based language learning research, including data-driven and theory driven empirical investigations of the relation between cognition, context, interaction, and language learning. They are particularly, but not exclusively, interested in research that tackles (aspects of) the above-mentioned questions about the nature of language, learning, and cognition.

The deadline for abstract submission is 5 November 2018.

Title: Article: Oneida Sign Language Created to Connect Deaf Community with their Culture

Oneida sign language created to connect deaf community with their culture
Deaf community members are working with master language speakers to create signs based on the Oneida language
by Ashley Albert
April 15, 2018

A grandmother is working to preserve the Oneida language for others — even though she has never heard it spoken herself.

Marsha Ireland, 59, has been deaf all her life. She's a member of the Turtle clan from Oneida Nation of the Thames, near London, Ont..

...The signs are being developed as part of a pilot project at the Oneida Language and Cultural Centre.

Marsha and her partner, Max Ireland, work with master speaker and elected councilor Olive Elm to create the signs.

...They're partly relying on a sign language developed hundreds of years ago by Plains Nations tribes that facilitated communication across North America.

"I look at the Oneida language and then look at the Plains sign language and try to connect the two. I look to Elders at the gestures that are used with story telling … it is a combination of all those things," said Ireland.

Since the Oneida language is action-based, Ireland said it really lends itself to the Plains sign language.

Title: Chumash Instructors Can Teach Tribal Language, Culture in Public Schools

Chumash Instructors Can Teach Tribal Language, Culture in Public Schools
In 2008, AB 544 set up a separate credential for teaching Native American languages in California
By Veronica V. Sandoval
February 28, 2018

The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, which supported successful state legislation to make teaching credentials available in the subjects of Native American language and culture, now has three instructors with clear credentials who are ready to teach students throughout the Santa Ynez Valley.

Nakia Zavalla, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians’ culture director, along with Kathleen Marshall and Carmen Sandoval recently obtained their Native American Language and Native American Culture clear credential, which allows them to teach the subjects in public schools.

“Teaching in local classrooms gives us the opportunity to share our Samala language and culture with children who many not have been previously exposed to Chumash life,” Zavalla said.

“For us to earn these credentials and have the ability to go into Santa Ynez Valley schools as teachers is a great accomplishment and a step forward for our tribe,” Zavalla said.
