Title: Self-Improvement Assignments
Body:

In this week's Topic of the Week article, Laura Sexton talks about a self-improvement unit that she and her Spanish 2 students do. After choosing one of three topics (exercise, time management, or money management), students form groups and document their progress towards self-improvement goals in several different ways, including blogging, commenting on other students' blog entries, collecting resources on a group Pinterest board, and presenting what they have learned in a motivational video as a final project.

For our Activity of the Week, Ms. Sexton has shared the specific details for the students' assignments, which we are including here as a PDF document. Spanish words have been translated in parentheses so that you can adapt these tasks to the language that you teach.

Title: Using Hanabi to Promote Learner Autonomy by Discerning Word Stress and Intonation
Body:

Purpose

In this activity, learners will practice using word stress and prominence by playing the analog game Hanabi. Learners will each have a hand of cards facing outwards and will work together to create the best fireworks display by giving each other hints on the cards in their hands and whether or not to play a card. Each learner has an equal role to play in the success of the group based on the quality of the hints they are giving, so the game implicitly promotes learner autonomy. Each group of learners will compete to get the highest score, the purpose being to help learners take initiative in using their language to succeed. The teacher will encourage learners to continue noticing and practicing word stress and intonation by sharing real world examples of how this language feature is used.

Objectives

Learners will be able to…

  • Identify and analyze word stress and intonation.
  • Utilize word stress and intonation to give useful information.
  • Connect in-class exercise to real world experience.

Modes

Interpersonal Communication, Interpretive Listening, Presentational Speaking

Resources

Copies of Hanabi (2-5 players), Sample script for teacher, Rules for Hanabi

Procedure

Download the instructions for the sequence of activities here.

Title: Book: Second Language Pronunciation Assessment
Body:

From https://zenodo.org/record/165465#.WDeBw5LHu3F

Second Language Pronunciation Assessment
By Talia Isaacs and Pavel Trofimovich

This book is open access under a CC BY license. It spans the areas of assessment, second language acquisition (SLA) and pronunciation and examines topical issues and challenges that relate to formal and informal assessments of second language (L2) speech in classroom, research and real-world contexts. It showcases insights from assessing other skills (e.g. listening and writing) and highlights perspectives from research in speech sciences, SLA, psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics, including lingua franca communication, with concrete implications for pronunciation assessment. This collection will help to establish commonalities across research areas and facilitate greater consensus about key issues, terminology and best practice in L2 pronunciation research and assessment. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, this book will appeal to a mixed audience of researchers, graduate students, teacher-educators and exam board staff with varying levels of expertise in pronunciation and assessment and wide-ranging interests in applied linguistics.

Title: Book: Cross-linguistic Transfer in Reading in Multilingual Contexts
Body:

Cross-linguistic Transfer in Reading in Multilingual Contexts
Edited by Elena Zaretsky and Mila Schwartz
Published by John Benjamins Publishing Company

This book represents concurrent attempts of multiple researchers to address the issue of cross-linguistic transfer in literacy. It includes broad spectrum of languages and reflects a new generation of conceptualizations of cross-linguistic transfer, offering a different level of complexity by studying children who are trilingual and even learning a fourth language.

The collection of papers in this volume tried to capture the dynamic developmental changes in cross-linguistic transfer that include such factors as age of acquisition, typological proximity of L1 and L2 (and L3, L4), intensity of exposure to language and reading in ambient and newly acquired language(s), quality of input and home literacy. More stringent methodological considerations allowed to isolate specific constructs that suggest either primary levels of children’s metalinguistic abilities (phonological awareness that can be applied cross-linguistically) or a more language-specific constructs (morphological awareness) that relies on various factors, including typological proximity, language proficiency and task demands.

Practical Advice for Teachers of Heritage Learners of Spanish: Essays by Classroom Teachers
By Mike Peto with Adrienne Brandenburg, Barbara Davis, Carol Gaab, Wendy Gómez Campos, Sean Lawler, and Katherine Thornburgh

This collection of personal essays addresses an urgent problem in language education: how to teach heritage learners of Spanish. This is a challenge for which most Spanish teachers have never been truly prepared. From the unique issues of identity that many heritage learners face (and how that impacts our classes) to the unexpected obstacles that our students face in school, we discuss surprises that we have confronted and highlight our best strategies. We describe difficulties that we have faced in our classrooms, including the initial placement of students in a heritage learners program, learning to manage highly differentiated classes, and structuring day to day lessons that engage our students. Rather than a group of scholarly essays describing ideal practices, these essays depart from the often imperfect teaching context of each individual teacher. Together our essays resonate with observations that may at times contradict each other, perhaps inviting solutions that oppose each other, but always opening doors to a world of possibilities for the teacher new to teaching heritage learners.

Becoming and Being an Applied Linguist: The life histories of some applied linguists
Edited by Rod Ellis
Published by John Benjamins Publishing Company

Becoming and Being an Applied Linguist contains narrative accounts of the lives of thirteen well-established applied linguists. Their professional autobiographies document the development of some of the key areas of applied linguistics – second, language acquisition, motivation, grammar, vocabulary, testing, second language writing, second language classroom research, practitioner research, English as a lingua franca, teacher cognition, and computer-assisted language learning. The book tells how these applied linguists grew into their areas of specialization. It will be of interest to any would-be applied linguist. The book also provides a readable overview of the whole field that will be of value to students of applied linguistics.

Title: Call for Papers: Jil Jadid Conference 2017
Body:

From http://linguistlist.org/issues/27/27-4849.html

The Department of and Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin are happy to announce the 7th Annual Jil Jadid “New Generation” Conference in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish Languages and Literatures, a graduate student conference to be held at the University of Texas at Austin, February 24-25, 2017.

Jil Jadid aims to provide a forum for young scholars spread across a variety of disciplines to come together, share ideas and research, and discuss the future of their respective fields. This is especially critical as we move forward in our careers and come to represent the next generation of scholars engaging with the Middle East and its cultures. In addition to Arabic studies, we are pleased to welcome our colleagues in Hebrew, Persian, and Turkish in order to facilitate a valuable interdisciplinary exchange of new ideas.

This year, the conference will feature keynote speeches in linguistics by Dr. Alex Magidow (University of Rhode Island), and literature by Dr. Huda Fakhreddine (University of Pennsylvania). In addition to individual presentations, the conference will highlight explicit opportunities for participants to discuss their collective vision for the development of their fields.

Call Deadline: 13-Dec-2016
