Title: COFLT Presentation: Social Justice in the Language Classroom
Body:

The Confederation in Oregon for Language Teaching annual spring conference took place at Lewis and Clark University in Portland on March 12. The spring conference followed a workshops-only format; attendees could choose among four different all-day workshops. One of these was focused on social justice in language teaching and learning. Carlton Rounds of Cross Cultural Solutions presented about language acquisition as a tool for developing critical thinking, emotional resilience, and cultural humility; curricular integration; and international volunteer service. CASLS director Julie Sykes introduced participants to a series of digital games for use in the the language classroom to promote language proficiency as well as critical thinking around social justice issues. The workshop began with a brief introduction to the use of digital games for language learning. This was followed by hands-on activities in which participants had the opportunity play sample games and experience classroom activities associated with each of the games. Curriculum packets for classroom implementation were provided. As always, it was wonderful to connect with local educators around approaches and issues that we are passionate about here at CASLS.

Looking Beyond Words: Gestures in the Pedagogy of Second Languages in Multilingual Canada
By Giuliana Salvato
Published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing

This book is a result of the growing number of insights found in recent research on gesture studies and language acquisition, which have renewed the attention of scholars in gesture functions and meanings in communication and language learning. Observation of the participation of both gesture and speech in the formulation of meaning has revealed that communication is typically multimodal. This perspective has produced engrossing research questions, particularly in contexts where the combination of languages and cultures is complex and diversified. Competence in multiple languages and in different semiotic systems inevitably impacts the way in which people interact and learn languages. Given its status as a country of immigration, Canada provides such a context for this study.

This book discusses the changes that the literature on gesture studies can help implement in current practices of language pedagogy. By including gesture as a nonverbal dimension of language and as a means for language acquisition, it provides a contrast to those traditions that have viewed gesture as a marginal aspect of communication and language learning. In addition, this book offers the results of three research studies in Italian language classes in Canada, showing that gesture enables a multimodal approach in language pedagogy and a richer experience for both teachers and learners.

Title: Conference: Current Approaches to Spanish and Portuguese Second Language Phonology
Body:

From http://u.osu.edu/caspslaposu2016/

The fifth biennial conference on Current Approaches to Spanish and Portuguese Second Language Phonology (CASPSLaP) will be held at The Ohio State University in Columbus, April 15-17, 2016. CASPSLaP brings together leading experts in the field of the second language acquisition (SLA) of Spanish and Portuguese pronunciation. The presentations will include a wide range of topics, from the acquisition of Spanish phonology by English speakers to the acquisition of Portuguese phonology by Spanish speakers; from classroom-based learning to full immersion in the second-language culture; among various other topics. By focusing on the breadth of approaches currently taken by scholars researching the SLA of Spanish and Portuguese phonology, this conference aims to present the state-of-the-art in second language phonological acquisition.

In addition to the general session, the conference will feature two special sessions on the L2 acquisition of prosody and the phonology of heritage speakers, both with invited discussants. There will also be a poster session, as well as an interactive, pedagogy-focused session called Ignite that addresses best practices in classroom pronunciation instruction. CASPSLAP 2016 will be held in concert with the OSU Congress on Hispanic and Lusophone Linguistics (OSUCHiLL).

Title: Latin Immersion Opportunities This Summer
Body:

From http://www.latin.org/

SALVI's mission is to propagate communicative approaches to Latin language acquisition, making the entire Classical tradition of Western culture more available to—and enjoyable for—students, teachers, and the general public.

Summer 2016 at Claymont Estate will feature two week-long Latin immersion events--Rusticatio Tironum and Rusticatio Veteranorum--as well as the four-day teacher workshop Pedagogy Rusticatio.

Three Bidua Latina (one in Charles Town, West Virginia, one in Malibu, California, and one in Tulsa, Oklahoma) provide a full weekend of Latin immersion. Teachers will return to their classrooms with active Latin strategies they can use right away. Academia Aestiva, hosted at the Getty Villa in Malibu, California, is a five-day partial-immersion workshop designed for high school Latin students of all levels.

To meet the needs of a growing number of language instructors who teach online, the Hawaii National Foreign Language Resource Center (NFLRC) has teamed with North Carolina Virtual Public Schools (NCVPS) to develop a series of professional development modules on online language pedagogy. The purpose of this session is to provide an overview of the design, development and implementation of these modules and inform the audience about opportunities to take advantage of them by implementing them in various professional development contexts, since the module and corresponding badge structure are offered as an open educational resource to any interested institution. This presentation is based on one given at the ACTFL 2015 Convention in San Diego, CA.

The webinar will take place on April 6. You can register at https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/5696140207881765891
