Title: Northwest Indian Language Institute 2016
Body:

From http://pages.uoregon.edu/nwili/summer-institute/summer-institute-2016

The Northwest Indian Language Institute’s Summer Institute 2016 will take place June 20-30 at the University of Oregon in Eugene. The theme of the 2016 Institute, Speaking Every Day, Everyday Speaking, encourages us to use our languages in our daily lives, in whatever ways we can, whether that is a greeting, a song, a prayer, a conversation, or a full day of Native language only.

2016 classes and events support the theme. The Advocacy class will focus on language nesting and use. The Endangered Languages Learning-Teaching Strategies and “Sleeping” language courses support communities who are restoring languages from older materials to use these languages daily. The Games and Activities teaching methods course highlights fun ways to incorporate language at home and in classrooms. The weekend workshop looks at what Native American stories and literature teach us about using our languages and then, to share our languages using technology. Language and linguistics classes provide the building blocks for Speaking Every Day, Everyday Speaking.

Registration for NILI 2016 is now open. The deadline for scholarship applications is April 1. For full details visit the NILI website at http://pages.uoregon.edu/nwili/summer-institute/summer-institute-2016

You Don't Need to be High Tech to get your Students Engaged!
Presented by Brenda Gaver
April 9, 2016
University of Arizona

With numerous apps and websites available to engage students, there seems to be a “shift” in how we reach 21st century learners. During this workshop, we will explore apps available to facilitate communication among students, communication with parents, and communication with colleagues. We will also explore other “tried and true” activities that will get your students communicating in the target language, without the use of technology.

Body:

From http://www.cal.org/solutions/institutes/building-educational-communities-of-inclusion-june-2016.html

Building Educational Communities of Inclusion: Cultural Proficiency and Equity
June 1–2, 2016
Center for Applied Linguistics, Washington, DC

Learn effective strategies to create educational access and opportunity for all students by promoting cultural proficiency and equity.

Please join CAL for this two-day institute designed to help educators and administrators learn how to implement the best practices of cultural proficiency. Participants will learn about various approaches to cultural proficiency. Broadly speaking, cultural proficiency allows individuals and organizations to interact effectively with people who differ from them, particularly those from non-dominant cultural contexts. It is a developmental approach for addressing the issues that emerge in diverse environments.

This informative institute is designed for PreK-12 educators, administrators and community practitioners, such as social workers, counselors, and after-school specialists. CAL encourages teams of educators and practitioners to attend.

The language advocacy site is available at http://sites.psu.edu/calperadvocacy/

Speaking of advocacy, here is a recent blog post by Alyssa Villarreal about how you can be a strong advocate for language teaching and learning: http://www.path2proficiency.com/language-advocacy-starts-with-you/
