Title: Martia Dementia: Tournament of Ancient Authors
Body:

The brackets for the college basketball tournaments were released yesterday. In tandem with March Madness, Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers will bring back Martia Dementia, the tournament that put ancient authors against one another last year. This year’s bracket also includes philosophers and political figures.

Each participant fills out a bracket, and then responds to a survey sent out for each round. Bolchazy-Carducci will offer book credit as prizes for the top scores (and one for the worst!).

Title: Circumlocution Activities for Spanish Learners
Body:

From http://www.path2proficiency.com/

Jaime Basham describes how he introduced the concept of circumlocution to his Spanish 2 students by breaking the strategy into three types. After looking at examples, students played a game called “Juego de Tarjetas” to practice their circumlocution skills.

Title: Grammar Resources for English Teachers and Learners
Body:

From http://blog.tesol.org

Kristen Lindahl writes, “Grammar is one of the most taught, most judged, and least understood concepts of language. Over hundreds of years, language teachers and textbook authors have attempted to reduce grammar to a digestible set of rules for students to remember and practice, only to realize that 1) the rules didn’t apply to every instance of use, and 2) the students didn’t really remember them anyway. Teachers can also be wary of grammar instruction, feeling less confident about teaching it than other aspects of language that seem more consistent and stable, such as vocabulary.” Read her full blog post for ideas and resources on teaching (and not teaching) grammar: http://blog.tesol.org/great-grammar-for-tesol-teachers/

Title: Local Engagement Through Global Questions
Body:

From http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/global_learning/2016/03/teacher_of_the_year_local_engagement_through_global_questions.html

Shanna Peeples, a high school English teacher in Texas and the Council of Chief State School Officers 2015 National Teacher of the Year, writes,

“Each day, teachers are charged with the invaluable task of preparing tomorrow's citizens. As educators, we have the agency to make instructional decisions that affect how students perceive the world around them. We can equip them with the essential knowledge and skills to thrive in this era of globalization—even beyond graduation.

“…In the 21st century, the world is a global village that can be engaged in with as little as the click of a mouse. This unique moment in time provides teachers the foundation to cultivate a classroom culture of globally themed student inquiry, in the class, the community, and beyond. Student questions are authentic, engaging, and self-motivating ways of disrupting the narrative of disengagement and classroom apathy by helping students sees themselves as global citizens.”
