Title: 2016 STARTALK Institute: Proficiency-based Pedagogy for Teachers of Russian
Body:

From http://www.middlebury.edu/ls/russian/startalkrussian

This program, first hosted by the Davis School of Russian in 2013, is for current and prospective teachers of Russian. The principles of second language acquisition, proficiency-based instruction, and the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century will serve as the foundation for this intensive pedagogy program.

The program curriculum is designed to give participants a solid understanding of the ACTFL proficiency guidelines, proficiency-oriented teaching, and Standards for Foreign Language Learning. Participants will learn how to choose appropriate pedagogical strategies and apply effective teaching and assessment methods that will develop students' linguistic and cultural proficiency in Russian. The program curriculum will focus on communicative learner-centered instruction, which uses interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational modes of communication and integrates the five standards (communication, cultures, connections, comparisons and communities).

Online session: June 27- July 1
Residential session on Middlebury campus: July 7- 16

Application deadline: May 1.

Title: 2016 Project-Based Language Learning and Interculturality Intensive Summer Institute
Body:

From http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/events/view/84/

2016 Project-Based Language Learning & Interculturality Intensive Summer Institute
June 27-July 1, 2016
University of Hawai’i at Manoa

How can Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) help learners develop interculturality -- the ability to inhabit and interpret different cultures and to see one’s own culture through the eyes of another? How do I design rigorous PBLL projects to incorporate intercultural telecollaborations? The NFLRC 2016 Intensive Summer Institute (ISI) will help you answer these questions with guidance from experts in the field through a dynamic, technology-rich professional development experience. You will further develop a Project Blueprint for your own language classroom assisted by colleagues and guided by a group of language professionals with background in PBL, language pedagogy, instructional technology, and assessment.

In-service K-16 world language educators are invited to apply for this on-site, in-person institute. The NFLRC 2016 Intensive Summer Institute is not a beginner's workshop. In order to join, applicants will need to first create an interculturality-focused Project Blueprint and earn a digital badge from the 2016 Fundamentals of Project-Based Language Learning Online Institute as a prerequisite. (Participants who have already obtained a 2015 Fundamentals of PBLL badge need to take an additional module and submit an interculturality-focused Project Blueprint to be able to apply.)

Seats are limited and applications will be competitive.

Intensive Summer Institute (ISI) application deadline: April 15, 2016

Title: CLEAR Summer Workshops in 2016
Body:

From http://clear.msu.edu/clear/resources/professional-development/summer-workshops/

The Center for Language Education and Research, one of CASLS’ sister Language Resource Centers, will be offering the following summer workshops in 2016:

Speaking activities for oral proficiency development
Dr. Julie Foss
Monday, July 11, 2016 - Wednesday, July 13, 2016
We want our students to become proficient speakers of the target language, but what exactly is proficiency, and how can we help students achieve it? We will begin answering these questions by identifying what speakers at different levels and sublevels of the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines can do, and how the Guidelines can be used to set realistic oral performance and proficiency goals for your learners. After exploring considerations for developing and implementing speaking activities for Novice to Advanced levels and evaluating a variety of sample activities, you will begin creating activities that target your learners’ oral proficiency goals.

Differentiated instruction in the language classroom
Dr. Julie Foss
Thursday, July 14, 2016
Each of our students has different needs, levels of readiness, interests, learning styles, and motivations. This one-day workshop is designed to help language teachers meet the challenge of anticipating and responding to these differences. We will examine a variety of ways to differentiate content, process, and product in the language classroom, including planning differentiated units, lessons, activities, and assessments. You will begin putting some of these techniques into action by creating materials for your learners.

Keeping student and teacher talk in the target language
Dr. Charlene Polio
Friday, July 15, 2016
This one-day workshop will demonstrate ways to increase teacher and student talk in the target language. For beginners, we will focus on teacher strategies for staying in the target language and observe sample lessons for teaching grammar and giving instructions for complex activities. For more advanced students, we will focus on getting the students to use more complex language in a variety of speaking and writing activities.

Teaching language with technology: Basic tools and techniques
Dr. Betsy Lavolette
Monday, July 18, 2016 - Wednesday, July 20, 2016
Technology can help teachers engage language students and develop 21st century skills, for example, through classroom language exchanges via the internet. Technology can also help teachers assess students' progress, keep them motivated toward learning goals, and provide students with timely feedback--without burdening teachers with extra grading. In this workshop, you will learn about tools for accomplishing these purposes, such as language exchange apps, in-class response systems, language games, and CLEAR's Rich Internet Applications. You will also have the opportunity to work with these tools hands-on to develop assessments and activities for your classroom. No tech skills? No problem! You will work with an experienced teacher-trainer who can walk you through the basics.

Writing in the foreign language classroom
Dr. Charlene Polio
Thursday, July 21, 2016 - Saturday, July 23, 2016
This workshop will look at writing from two perspectives: writing to learn and learning to write. First, we will examine activities that facilitate the learning of grammar and vocabulary as well as activities that enhance speaking, listening, and reading. Second, we will examine activities that help students learn to write various genres, from simple to complex, in the target language. Participants will evaluate activities that can be modified for a wide range of levels and languages.
