Title: New Issue of Reading in a Foreign Language
Body:

From http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/rfl/

The October 2015 issue of Reading in a Foreign Language, from our sister LRC the National Foreign Language Resource Center, is available online at http://nflrc.hawaii.edu/rfl/October2015/

This issue begins as a special issue, “Connections between Second Language Reading and Writing”, edited by Betsy Gilliland and Jeongyeon (Jay) Park.

This special issue includes six regular articles. Two articles focus on adding reading interventions to language classes and evaluating the impact of those interventions on L2 college students’ writing.  The next three articles consider the effects of integrated reading and writing instruction on students’ abilities to write from and with sources. In the final article, Betsy Gilliland draws on classroom observation and audio data to examine connections between education policy and instructional practice.

In addition, there are three articles that continue the discussion of extensive reading that first appeared in the April 2015 issue of RFL.

This edition includes RFL’s annual feature, "Readings on L2 Reading: Publications in Other Venues" presenting references through 2014-2015 by Cindy Brantmeier, Haley Dolosic, Lyndsie Schultz, Cristian Aquino-Sterling, and Tracy Van Bishop.

Usage-Based Perspectives on Second Language Learning
Edited by Teresa Cadierno and Søren Wind Eskildsen
Published by de Gruyter

Title: Book: Cognate Vocabulary in Language Acquisition and Use

Cognate Vocabulary in Language Acquisition and Use: Attitudes, Awareness, Activation
By Agnieszka Otwinowska
Published by Multilingual Matters

This book brings together linguistic, psycholinguistic and educational perspectives on the phenomenon of cognate vocabulary across languages. It presents a large-scale, long-term research project focusing on Polish-English cognates and their use by bilingual and multilingual learners/users of English. It discusses extensive qualitative and quantitative data to explain which factors affect a learner’s awareness of cognates, how adult learners can benefit from raised awareness and whether cognate vocabulary can be used with younger learners as a motivational strategy. The work shows how cognate vocabulary can be examined from a range of methodological perspectives and provides considerable insights into crosslinguistic influences in language learning. While the focus of the studies is Polish-English cognates, the research will be of interest to anyone teaching learners of different language constellations, levels, ages and backgrounds.

From http://www.wcupa.edu/_academics/sch_cas.flg/talfl/

The Department of Languages and Cultures at West Chester University
with the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) are pleased to host the

Sixth TESOL/Applied Linguistics/Foreign Languages (TALFL) Conference
Aim High, Reach High
April 16, 2016
Graduate Business Center
West Chester University
West Chester, PA, USA

Teachers generally recognize that it is necessary to aim high to attain the desired outcome, but many face the challenge of how to do so effectively in language learning tasks. This year’s TALFL Conference is designed to provide a platform for an exchange of views and sharing experiences on the teaching practices that promote language learners’ development in the classroom. The conference welcomes presentations that address students’ needs and teachers’ actions that enhance students’ language development. The topic of goal setting and attainment can be examined in a wide range of areas of language learning, including (though not limited to) teaching methodology, materials development, assessment and learning, and technology.

Proposals of practical, empirical, and/or theoretical work which address or demonstrate the topic are invited. Proposals are due January 3, 2016.
