Title: Self-Paced Online Course: Fundamentals of Sheltered Instruction
Body:

From http://www.cal.org/resource-center/publications/fundamentals-of-sheltered-instruction

Fundamentals of Sheltered Instruction: Featuring the SIOP Model
New self-paced online course from CAL

This self-paced online course is designed to help administrators and teachers increase their knowledge about sheltered instruction to support the language and content learning needs of English learners.

Based on decades of research by the Center for Applied Linguistics on how language is learned and extensive experience working effectively with educators to help English learners succeed in the classroom, the Fundamentals of Sheltered Instruction online course is divided into modules designed to increase knowledge about how language is learned in the content area classroom and explore the characteristics and benefits of sheltered instruction. Using examples based on the widely-used and effective SIOP Model, participants will read and view instructional activities that showcase selected principles of sheltered instruction.

Each module is guided by both content and language objectives, beginning with a warm-up activity and includes a narrated PowerPoint presentation and readings. Throughout the course, participants have opportunities to reflect upon and practice the new learning; self-assess through quizzes; view real-world examples through video demonstration; and apply lessons learned through wrap-up activity.

For full details and to sign up for the course go to http://www.cal.org/resource-center/publications/fundamentals-of-sheltered-instruction

Title: Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program: Peru, India, and Senegal in 2016
Body:

From http://www2.ed.gov/programs/iegpssap/sapfacts.html

The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program provides opportunities for overseas experience. The program is open to educators and administrators with responsibilities for curriculum development in fields related to humanities, languages, and area studies. Topics and host countries of the seminars vary from year to year. All seminars are in non-Western European countries. Seminars are designed to provide a broad and introductory cultural orientation to a particular country or countries. The program is geared towards those educators with little or no experience in the host country(ies) who demonstrate the need to develop and enhance their curriculum through short-term study and travel abroad.

The seminar offered in 2016 will be:
Primary Level (Elementary and Secondary Level, K-8): Peru
  Secondary Level (9-12): India
Postsecondary Level (U.S. community colleges, 4-year public/private institutions): Senegal

Terms of the award include: (1) round-trip economy airfare; (2) room and board; (3) fees; and (4) program-related travel within the host country(ies). Participants are responsible for a cost share, usually $600.00 (to defray the costs of the pre-departure orientation), plus travel insurance, inoculations required by the country (if applicable), personal passport and visa costs. The summer 2016 application and reference form deadline is December 9, 2015.

Title: Article: World Languages Vs. Programming Languages

World Languages Vs. Programming Languages
by Judy Heflin
October 21, 2015

Some states have proposed and passed legislation introducing coding into school curriculum. This past May, Arkansas passed a comprehensive law requiring all public and charter schools to offer computer science courses and New Mexico and Kentucky have proposed similar legislation. However, a newly proposed policy in Florida appears to be the first that would allow languages to be fully replaced with coding. A survey by Oraco Technology in the U.K. announced that Python overtook French as the most popular language learned in primary schools and that six out of ten parents would rather have their children learn to program than learn French. The description of both subjects as languages is suggestive of an academic overlap. However, while programming and linguistics do share certain aspects, as Amy Hirotka from code.org says, “We still believe [coding] is fundamentally different than a world language.”

Title: Book: Sign Languages of the World
Body:

From http://www.degruyter.com/view/product/429986?format=G

Sign Languages of the World: A Comparative Handbook
Edited by Julie Bakken Jepsen, Goedele De Clerck, Sam Lutalo-Kiingi, and William B. McGregor
Published by de Gruyter

Although a number of edited collections deal with either the languages of the world or the languages of particular regions or genetic families, only a few cover sign languages or even include a substantial amount of information on them. This handbook provides information on some 38 sign languages, including basic facts about each of the languages, structural aspects, history and culture of the Deaf communities, and history of research. This information will be of interest not just to general audiences, including those who are deaf, but also to linguists and students of linguistics. By providing information on sign languages in a manner accessible to a less specialist audience, this volume fills an important gap in the literature.

Japan: Teaching Peace, Connecting People
Offered by Primary Source in collaboration w/Boston Children’s Museum
November 7, 2015
Boston Children’s Museum

This workshop will explore ways Japan has contributed to world peace since the end of World War II and in particular how K-8 teachers can teach about Japan, peace building, and friendship. In the 70 years since the devastation of Hiroshima, artistic expressions such as origami cranes and children’s literature (including Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes) have raised the profile of peace education. We will look at how student-to-student projects develop friendships and expand worldviews. While this day will focus on Japan and peace education, many of the ideas can be used to explore other cultures and to build relationships with peoples worldwide.
