Adjusting the Focus: Retooling Lessons with a Lens of Interculturality
Thursday 01 October 2015, 16:30 - 18:00
Presenter: Nathan Lutz

Intercultural competence is the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people of other cultures. Using Byram’s five Savoirs, we will focus on ways to re-examine your curriculum with a lens of interculturality. In this hands-on session, participants will look at commonly taught lessons and retool them to reflect investigations of products and practices, understanding of cultural perspectives, and participation in cultural interaction. We will also explore the NCSSFL Interculturality Can-Do Statements and adapt them to participants' learning environments, whether they are at the elementary, middle, high school, or post-secondary levels. Participants will leave with an eye toward interculturality and the process to break down a lesson and infuse it with skills and knowledge for helping students achieve intercultural competence.

Title: Fall 2015 Language Teacher Symposium
Body:

From http://cercll.arizona.edu/

LaTeS: Fall 2015 Language Teacher Symposium
Technology Tools that Build Language and Interculturality
Presented by Nicole Naditz (ACTFL Language Teacher of the Year, Bella Vista High School)
Saturday October 3rd, 2015, 9 am to 4 pm on the University of Arizona campus, in the Integrated Learning Center (ILC) Room 137.

Join an award-winning world language teacher in an exploration of online tools that allow teachers to use authentic video more meaningfully with her students, and tools that help teachers curate the web to design rich, multimedia experiences grounded and authentic materials that also facilitate communication among the students and potentially with native speakers around the world.

You will see examples of how each of the tools have been used in the presenter's classroom, learn step-by-step how to create your own learning experiences for students using these tools, and you will have time to design your own activities for your own classes using each of the tools. Because the activities you will design are grounded in authentic materials, you will see how easy it is to tailor the activities and lessons you create to all levels of language learners and to any theme of study.

You must register by October 1.

Title: National Survey for American Sign Language Instructors
Body:

From the OFLA listserv:

In our American Sign Language/Interpreter Education (ASLIE) and Master of Science in Secondary Education (MSSE) for Students Who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing teacher preparation departments at National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology, we want to investigate various concerns and trends in terms of meeting the Common Core State Standards that are aligned with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. To learn more about common trends with other ASL educators in the United States, this is where the survey comes in. The purpose of this survey is to identify the issues that all educators who teach ASL in K-12 educational settings and colleges encounter. The survey will help us better understand the national needs of teaching practice and research for K-12 ASL educators and college educators.

The Principal Investigator of this particular study is Dr. Kim B. Kurz. The other team research members are Drs. Chris Kurz, Susan Lane-Outlaw and Gerald Bateman. Questions about any risk to you because of participation in this project may be addressed to Drs. Kim Kurz (Kim.Kurz@rit.edu) and Chris Kurz (caknsp@rit.edu) or the RIT’s Office of Human Subjects Research by emailing them at HSRO@rit.edu.

With the results from the survey, we will be able to revisit out teacher preparation curriculum, create and provide training to professionals in ASL education (K-12 teachers, post-secondary educators and faculty, and researchers) in the United States.

If you have already taken this survey, there is no need to do it again. If you have not, please take some time to fill out the survey. It includes questions about your background, your experience with the Common Core State Standards/ACTFL and your thoughts on the trends and issues that are important in ASL education.

Participation is voluntary and you can choose not to take part or stop participating at any time with no penalty. The survey will take you less than 20 minutes to complete. Your participation will remain anonymous. Only the research team will have access to the survey results. We aim to disseminate the results widely. We don't anticipate any risks to you from participating in this survey. By clicking on the link and participating in the survey, you are willing to consent to enter, respond, participate and submit the survey. We need all responses by November 1st.

Please forward this survey to the party or parties responsible for delivering ASL instruction in your setting.

Thank you very much for your assistance with this project.

The survey link can be found here: https://clipboard.rit.edu/take.cfm?sid=43A12FAA

Sincerely,
Sheila Puzio, RIT/NITD, MSSE Graduate Assistant to Dr. Kim Kurz & Dr. Chris Kurz

Title: Goethe-Institut Exhibit "Umdenken: Von der Natur lernen"
Body:

From the AATG-L listserv:

Dear Colleagues in NY, NJ, PA,

We would like to invite you and your students to a Goethe-Institut exhibit "Umdenken: Von der Natur lernen" (Rethinking: Learning from nature) that we present in cooperation with NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering. Focusing on the four elements fire, water, earth, and air, this interactive exhibit presents surprising facts and showcases what each of us can do to help protect our environment. Following an interdisciplinary approach and providing customized teaching material, the exhibition combines learning German with the subject of environmental protection. The exhibit is in German, but English translations for all elements are provided; thus it is an ideal opportunity for German learners to interact with authentic materials in the target language (with the support of translations if needed). The exhibition is designed for students ages 13 and above, but is also suitable for younger audiences.

When:   October 05-25, 2015; daily 10 am - 6 pm
Where:  NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering
        Jacobs Building
        6 MetroTech Center
