Title: Workshop: Developing Materials for Heritage Learners of Spanish

Developing Materials for Heritage Learners of Spanish
Thursday, July 30, 2015 - 09:00 to 15:00
The University of Texas at Austin

Presenter(s):
Delia Montesinos (The University of Texas at Austin)
Claudia Holguín (University of Oregon)

Despite their growing popularity, Heritage Spanish programs remain underserved by commercial textbook publishers. This workshop will examine how Heritage Spanish programs can supplement commercially produced materials in order to meet the unique needs of their students. But if program produce their own materials, what should they look like? How best can DIY materials supplement commercial materials? Should they be open educational resources to be shared with other Heritage Spanish programs? In addition to these issues, this workshop will also explore different approaches to developing Heritage Spanish curricula.

The workshop will be held at the Glickman Conference Center, CLA 1.302B, The University of Texas at Austin. If you are traveling from out of town to attend, see the University's Visitor Resources page for travel information.

Lunch is included in this all-day workshop. A nominal tiered fee is charged to cover materials, refreshments, and lunch.

Turkish Paper Struggles To Save Ladino Language
by Cnaan Lipshiz
June 13, 2015

Every time she prepares her newspaper for print, Karen Sarhon has her pick from dozens of submissions she receives daily from writers around the world.

A desirable situation for any editor-in-chief, Sarhon says it is nothing short of unbelievable for her monthly, El Amaneser, which is the world’s only newspaper in Ladino — a Jewish-Spanish language teetering on the brink of extinction.

“In the 1970s, Ladino was truly a dying language, but El Amaneser is among the relatively new initiatives giving Ladino a new lease on life,” said Sarhon, a Turkish-Jewish linguist who launched the Ladino publication 10 years ago as part of her work at the Turkish Jewish community’s Ottoman-Turkish Sephardic Culture Research Center.

Sarhon’s center was founded as Jews worldwide, and especially in Israel, grew alarmed at the prospect of Ladino’s disappearance and mounted an international effort spanning four continents to preserve it. The effort to preserve the language also has gotten a boost from Spain’s push to export its culture and language abroad through its Cervantes Institute – and from popular nostalgia for Sephardic culture.

The Decline of International Studies
Why Flying Blind Is Dangerous
By Charles King
July 2015

In October 2013, the U.S. Department of State eliminated its funding program for advanced language and cultural training on Russia and the former Soviet Union. Created in 1983 as a special appropriation by Congress, the so-called Title VIII Program had supported generations of specialists working in academia, think tanks, and the U.S. government itself. But as a State Department official told the Russian news service RIA Novosti at the time, “In this fiscal climate, it just didn’t make it.” The program’s shuttering came just a month before the start of a now well-known chain of events: Ukraine’s Euromaidan revolution, Russia’s annexation of Crimea, and the descent of U.S.-Russian relations to their lowest level since the Cold War. The timing was, to say the least, unfortunate.

The end of the United States’ premier federal program for Russian studies saved taxpayers only $3.3 million—the cost of two Tomahawk cruise missiles or about half a day’s sea time for an aircraft carrier strike group. … In response to lobbying by universities and scholarly associations, Title VIII was resuscitated earlier this year, but it came back at less than half its previous funding level and with future appropriations left uncertain. Given the mounting challenges that Washington faces in Russia and eastern Europe, now seems to be an especially odd time to reduce federal support for educating the next cohort of experts.

Esperanto language making a comeback
by Stina Sieg
June 13, 2015

More than hundred years ago, a Polish physician and inventor had an ambitious idea: Create a language that anyone could learn easily. The hope was to promote world peace through a universal tongue.

It took several decades, but eventually L.L. Zamenhof designed Esperanto.

Although the language hasn't become as popular as Zamenhof hoped — or brought world peace — it's estimated that anywhere between 200,000 and 2 million people speak the language worldwide. Devotees say Esperantists exist all over the globe, with especially large pockets in Europe, as well as China, Japan and Brazil.

The popular language-learning platform Duolingo is even about to issue an Esperanto app.
