Title: Reading a Newspaper Article about Current Events
Body:

This activity is designed to aid learners in learning to read news articles using relevant strategies.

Outcome:        Learners will be able to use anticipation, annotation, and reflection strategies to synthesize important information from a news article.

Resources:      Reading a News Paper Article handout

Procedure:

  1. Begin by selecting a news article relevant to the course content. The ideal text would contain images, a clear title, and current information.
  2. Pre-reading: Have learners anticipate the content based on the look of the article.  Begin by asking about characteristics that most newspapers have in common. Then ask learners to guess the content of the specific article based on the images and title.
  3. During Reading: As learners read, ask them to annotate the article for specific information using the annotation key provided in Step 2.
  4. After Reading: Have learners go back and check the accuracy of their predictions and then create five 'tweets' (short statements around 140 characters) that summarize what they read and give an opinion.

Title: Using Mobile Technology for Independent Reading by Mandy Gettler, CASLS Associate Director
Body:

Many students need additional time outside of the classroom to develop their reading proficiency, particularly in languages that have few, if any, English cognates or don't use the Roman alphabet.

"The problem with reading is regularity and frequency," says Co-Director of the Chinese Flagship Program Professor Zhuo Jing-Schmidt.

To give students independent reading practice and increase their exposure to a variety of Chinese characters, the Chinese Flagship Program at the University of Oregon turned to mobile technology. The program introduced a mobile reading component for students who need additional practice. Students download a Chinese new app called Tencent News, read ten news reports per week, and then write a weekly summary with critical comments.

"With the mobile reading component, students can do it on the go and develop a good habit," Professor Jing-Schmidt says of the project.

To download the Tencent News app free of charge, search the iTunes or Google Play store. The Oregon Chinese Flagship Program is funded by The Language Flagship  through the National Security Education Program.

Title: Book: Interlanguage: Forty years later

Interlanguage: Forty years later
Edited by ZhaoHong Han and Elaine Tarone
Published by John Benjamins Publishing Company

Few works in the field of second language acquisition (SLA) can endure multiple reads, but Selinker's (1972) "Interlanguage" is a clear exception. Written at the inception of the field, this paper delineates a disciplinary scope; asks penetrating questions; advances daring hypotheses; and proposes a first-ever conceptual and empirical framework that continues to stimulate SLA research. Sparked by a heightened interest in this founding text on its 40th anniversary, 10 leaders in their respective fields of SLA research collectively examine extrapolations of the seminal text for the past, the present, and the future of SLA research. This book offers a rare resource for novices and experts alike in and beyond the field of SLA.

Title: Book: Processing Perspectives on Task Performance
Body:

From https://benjamins.com/#catalog/books/tblt.5/main

Processing Perspectives on Task Performance
Edited by Peter Skehan
Published by John Benjamins Publishing Company

Understanding how second language task-based performance can be raised is vital for progress with task-based approaches to instruction. The chapters in this volume all attempt to advance this understanding, and do so within a viewpoint which assumes limited attentional capacities and accounts for second language speaking based on Levelt's model of first language speaking. Six empirical chapters present original studies. They explore the topics of task planning, familiarity of information in a task, task repetition, task characteristics, and the effects of using post-task transcription. The studies interweave with and build upon each other, reflecting their conjoint focus on how second language learning memory and attention limitations shape their performance in using the target language. In the concluding chapter the accumulated findings across these studies are discussed in terms of the nature of preparation for a task, the role of task structure, the respective claims of the Tradeoff and Cognition Hypotheses, the role of selective attention, and the implications of the studies for pedagogy. The book is a central reference for students in psycholinguistics, second language acquisition, and task-based language teaching.

Assessing Intercultural Language Learning: The Dependence of Receptive Sociopragmatic Competence and Discourse Competence on Learning Opportunities and Input
By Veronika Tempe
Published by Peter Lang International Academic Publishers

Although Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) has become a key objective in foreign language (FL) education, curricula offer little in how language teachers can promote ICC through language instruction. This book responds to the challenge of how intercultural language learning can be accounted for more profoundly in FL teaching. By means of innovative intercultural assessments, the author investigates the development of three language competences central to ICC in relation to learning opportunities as experienced by German learners of English. Audiovisual media were found to be a major input factor in the development of intercultural language abilities. The book ends with a discussion of how audiovisual media can be implemented in secondary and tertiary FL and teacher education.

Title: Call for Papers: Language Documentation and Conservation; Pedagogy in Language Documentation
Body:

From http://icldc4.icldc-hawaii.org

The 4th International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation (ICLDC), “Enriching Theory, Practice, & Application,” will be held February 26-March 1, 2015, at the Ala Moana Hotel in Honolulu. The 4th ICLDC is hosted by the Department of Linguistics and the National Foreign Language Resource Center at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS
General papers, posters, and electronic posters; NSF-supported Special Sessions on Pedagogy in Language Documentation

1) CALL FOR PROPOSALS: GENERAL CONFERENCE PAPERS, POSTERS, AND ELECTRONIC POSTERS
Proposal deadline: August 31, 2014

Topics
The organizers especially welcome abstracts that address the conference theme, “Enriching Theory, Practice, & Application.” Discipline-wide reflection on the relationship between the documentation linguistic structure and language pedagogy is crucial if the proper documentation and conservation of endangered languages is to be effective. The aim here is two-fold: to create citizen scientists who can reflect on their language for the purpose of teaching and documenting without being hindered by metalanguage, and to enrich the contributions of linguists to linguistic theory and description via documentation.

2) CALL FOR PROPOSALS: NSF-SUPPORTED SPECIAL SESSIONS ON PEDAGOGY IN LANGUAGE CONSERVATION
Proposal deadline: May 31, 2014

Special Session topics and format
This year, the organizers are inviting proposals for a series of four Special Sessions on Pedagogy in Language Conservation. Each session will contain four talks and will be focused on a theme relating to the notion of pedagogy for endangered language teaching.

For full details about both calls for proposals, go to http://icldc4.weebly.com/call-for-proposals.html

Title: Langcamp: Participant-driven Professional Development
Body:

From http://aventurasnuevas.wordpress.com/2014/05/01/langcamp-live-and-in-person

Here is a professional development opportunity that has spun off from the #LangChat Twitter hashtag. Langcamp started as a new Twitter hashtag that teachers could use in the summer of 2013 to share resources with each other. This coming summer a face-to-face Langcamp will take place in Asheville, NC, on July 9-10. According to the organizers, “[A]ll language teachers (including pre-service teachers) are invited to join us. You won’t want to miss two days of high quality participant-driven collaboration in a beautiful family friendly environment. We have a great retreat planned, and we encourage you to bring your families too.”
