American Association for Applied Linguistics Annual Conference
March 22-25, 2014
Portland, Oregon

The unofficial motto of the 2014 AAAL conference is ‘change’ – and ‘change’ is reflected this year both in the format of the conference and in the way the organizers put together the program. To ensure sustained dialog, the organizers have expanded the number of Roundtable presentations and scheduled most Individual Papers as thematic Sessions.

Title: Webinar: New Tools for Characterizing Preschool Dual Language Learners’ Experiences
Body:

Webinar from the Center for Early Care and Education Research-Dual Language Learners (CECER-DLL)

Title: Development of the CECER-DLL Parent and Teacher Questionnaires: New Tools for Characterizing Preschool DLLs' Experiences
 Date: Wednesday, March 12, 2014
 Time: 2:00 PM - 3:15 PM EDT

The Department of Education Office of Indian Education and Office of English Language Acquisition will be joining the Office of Head Start at the Administration for Children and Families for a joint webinar hosted by the Administration for Native Americans. The goal of the webinar is to help ACF and ED grantees address some common challenges to implementing Native American Languages in Early Childhood Settings.

Space is limited. Reserve your Webinar seat now at https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/719029314

The number of Spanish-speaking Dual Language Learners (DLLs) entering preschool programs in the U.S. is growing at an increasing rate. To understand DLLs' early development and design interventions to improve children's outcomes, researchers need high quality instruments to document the characteristics of DLLs, their families, and their classrooms as well as DLLs' experiences with their two languages. The Center for Early Care and Education Research-Dual Language Learners (CECER-DLL) has developed parent and teacher questionnaires to meet this need.

Featuring presenters Carol Scheffner Hammer, Shelley E. Scarpino, and Lauren M. Cycyk from Temple University, and hosted by Child Care and Early Education Research Connections, this webinar will present: (a) the content of questionnaires, (b) the iterative, multi-step process used to develop the questionnaires, including cognitive interviews with parents and teachers, (c) preliminary findings from a validation study, and (d) the next steps in the development process. Ultimately, the questionnaires will be made available to researchers. The goal is to provide the field with high quality questionnaires that can be used to characterize preschool DLLs' experiences.

Title: Critical Languages Song Project
Body:

From http://www.clsp.gatech.edu/Song_Project

The Critical Languages Song Project is a collection of advanced one-semester courses in culture and language tailored to the needs and concerns of the language and culture you are studying. Courses are available in Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese and Russian.

Access is provided at no charge to instructors and, through them, students for use in university-based courses. Access may be granted on a case-by-case basis to independent learners with a bonafide educational need.

Courses are structured around a carefully chosen, richly annotated corpus of songs and supplied with a full pedagogical apparatus and a broad range of contextual content in various media. They are presented in an innovative, specially designed computer interface. Materials are available to instructors for full-course adoption or integration into existing courses as self-standing modules. The model is also readily adaptable to other languages through a downloadable template and design tools.
