Title: Spanish Film Club: Bring Cinema to Your University
Body:

Spanish Film Club (SFC) celebrates its first successful two years with a new deadline: March 31, 2014.

Twice a year, SFC offers grants to help universities bring the very best in contemporary Spanish and Latin American cinema to campuses and to introduce students to the language and cultures of these territories.

Universities select a minimum of five films from a catalog of 35 titles to create a film festival on campus. Representing 19 countries, the films have been carefully selected by a team of experts and are backed by the most important festivals and film critics. Spanish Film Club also encourages the organization of virtual Q&As with filmmakers and provides all the necessary material for its promotion.

New films this cycle include award-winning titles like Bad Hair, Who is Dayani Cristal?, Eternal Amazon, Operation E, Wrinkles, Yvy Maraey, Land Without Evil, and 7 Boxes.

Title: Teaching Across the Board: Whole School Approach for English Language Learners
Body:

From http://languagemagazine.com/?page_id=31244

Teaching Across the Board
Margarita Calderón

One trend in many schools has been the use of push-in and pull-out ESL approaches to provide “EL services.” Realistically, when ELLs are pulled out for language, they miss out on learning content and on socialization with mainstream students. When their ESL teachers push in, the ELLs feel singled out and frequently withdraw from any meaningful learning during that intervention time. The programs also create other problems for teachers when schools do not allow quality preparation time for mainstream and ESL/bilingual teachers to meet and plan their co-teaching. Team teaching efforts become disjointed and ineffective.

When ELL learning outcomes become the focus, professional learning deepens educators’ content knowledge, pedagogical facilitation, and understanding of how ELLs learn language, literacy, and content at the same time. Student outcomes are contingent on continuous professional learning. Students and teachers benefit when schools and school districts commit to educator performance standards that delineate the knowledge, skills, practices, and dispositions of highly effective educators of ELLs. In fact, the whole school benefits.

Title: World Language Credit Program Finalist for Road Map Project Award by Mandy Gettler, CASLS Associate Director
Body:

Washington State's World Language Credit Program, led by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, is a finalist in the inaugural Road Map Project Awards Program. The Road Map Project seeks to double the number of students in South King County and South Seattle (Washington) who are on track to graduate from college or earn a career credential by 2020.

As part of that effort, the World Language Credit Program offers the opportunity for students with proficiency in a language other than English to earn world language credits by demonstrating proficiency in that language, regardless of how they learn that language. By emphasizing proficiency rather than seat time, the competency-based credit program recognizes the value of students' home languages. Districts provide opportunities for students to develop and maintain literacy in their native language, as well as English, and to demonstrate that proficiency through nationally available language assessments.

CASLS has helped the World Language Credit Program by offering LinguaFolio Online as a way to track students' proficiency and to ensure students are ready to take standardized assessments. CASLS staff have delivered training workshops to teachers and instructional aides in Washington to help them understand performance assessments, how to develop them, and how to use them in the classroom. Staff also provided training on how to incorporate LinguaFolio Online into the curriculum.

The World Language Credit Program is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In addition to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, the project includes seven participating districts in Washington, the Office of Education Ombudsman, School's Out Washington, CASLS, and Education Northwest.
