Title: L2 Pragmatics and Study Abroad
Body:

Study abroad environments can be an ideal context for activities targeted at L2 pragmatics.  This activity is designed to target service encounters in a study abroad context, but could be adapted for other language functions or target language spaces (e.g., a marketplace, a community meeting, or any other place where the target language is the dominant language).

Outcome:        Learners will be able to observe pragmatic behavior related to service encounters and incorporate patterns into their own use of the target language.

Resources:      Service Encounters and Study Abroad Resource sheet

Procedure:

  1. Begin by having learners brainstorm places where they engage in service encounters.  This could include, for example, the grocery store, university, and doctor offices.
  2. Have leaners observe five service encounter interactions in different contexts and collect relevant pragmatic information to inform their own service encounters. Discuss the observations and discern general pragmatic patterns related to service encounters.
  3. Have learners record three service encounters they are a participant in and compare their L2 pragmatic behavior with what they observed in the previous interactions.

Title: COFLT Spring Conference
Body:

Hello COFLT Members past and present,

The Spring Conference is March 1st, only two short weeks away, and it is shaping up to be a great professional development opportunity.  I encourage you to attend!  If you have already registered, pass this message on to a friend or colleague.

The registration deadline is February 24th to ensure a tasty lunch will be waiting for you.  Did you see the enticing Grilled Salmon Caesar Salad on the menu?

We are delighted to offer two great pre-conference workshops on February 28th.

Sabine Levet of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology will offer a workshop on Cultura, a dynamic, culturally focused program that develops intercultural learning while teaching a second language.  If you miss her workshop, you can still catch her keynote address on Saturday morning.

The second workshop by Violeta Ramsay of Linfield College offers you the opportunity to learn about the process of intercultural development in yourself and your students while you discover where you place on the intercultural developmental spectrum.  A certified Intercultural Development Inventory test administrator, Violeta will guide you through the IDI and discuss the results of the assessment with you.

The conference schedule and presentations are now posted to the COFLT website.  We have a great selection of presentations this year for all languages, levels, and interests.  Check them out!

Southwest Washington colleagues, we are happy to be able to offer Washington Continuing Ed Clock Hours for your attendance at the conference.  You can earn up to 10 clock hours for participation in both a pre-conference workshop and the conference.

We hope to see you in Forest Grove!

mit freundlichen Grüßen!

Languages for Specific Purposes in the Digital Era
Edited by Elena Bárcena, Timothy Read, and Jorge Arus
Published by Springer

This book explores the direct relation of modern CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) to aspects of natural language processing for theoretical and practical applications, and worldwide demand for formal language education and training that focuses on restricted or specialized professional domains. Unique in its broad-based, state-of-the-art, coverage of current knowledge and research in the interrelated fields of computer-based learning and teaching and processing of specialized linguistic domains.

The articles in this book offer insights on or analyses of the current state and future directions of many recent key concepts regarding the application of computers to natural languages, such as: authenticity, personalization, normalization, evaluation. Other articles present fundamental research on major techniques, strategies and methodologies that are currently the focus of international language research projects, both of a theoretical and an applied nature.

Title: Monograph: Goals of Collegiate Learners and the Standards for Foreign Language Learning
Body:

From http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-1118870964.html

Goals of Collegiate Learners and the Standards for Foreign Language Learning
By Sally Sieloff Magnan, Dianna Murphy, and Narek Sahakyan
Published by Wiley

This monograph presents a national study about how the language learning goals of college students are reflected in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century (National Standards in Foreign Language Education Project, 1996, 1999, 2006). With a mixed method design, the study includes responses from 16,529 students at 11 postsecondary institutions across the United States, with interviews from 200 students at two of these institutions. The first research to examine learner perspectives with regard to the Standards, this study considers (a) whether college students have goals consistent with the Standards, (b) whether they expect to reach these goals during their formal language study, (c) whether these goals and expectations differ for first-year and second-year language students, (d) whether they differ for students of more and less commonly taught languages, (e) whether students understand the Standards and see the five goal areas as interrelated or in terms of hierarchies of priorities, and (f) how the Standards might encourage student reflection, especially regarding the relationships among language, culture, and thought. With the aim of promoting critical thinking about the Standards and their possible application at the college level, the monograph details the history of the framework, with discussion of its limited acceptance and use in postsecondary instruction, and considers what student perceptions tell us about how the Standards might fit with assumptions and characteristics of communicative language teaching and literacy-based approaches to language learning. In this discussion, the monograph examines shortcomings in the Standards framework, as seen through the lens of student perceptions.

Translation in Language Teaching and Assessment
Edited by Dina Tsagari and Georgios Floros
Published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing

The aim of this volume is to record the resurgent influence of Language Learning in Translation Studies and the various contemporary ways in which translation is used in the fields of Language Teaching and Assessment. It examines the possibilities and limitations of the interplay between the two disciplines in attempting to investigate the degree to which recent calls for reinstating translation in language learning have borne fruit.

Beyond Form: Functional Perspectives on CALL Research and Teaching
Iowa State University, Memorial Union
September 12 & 13, 2014

The Applied Linguistics and Technology program at Iowa State University invites proposals for the 2014 TSLL Conference. Proposals are invited for papers and posters on current practices, challenges, and research directions that address form/function connections within CALL research and teaching. The organizers are especially interested in topics that address one or more of the following areas:

- How can a functional approach to language be exploited for the development of technological innovations in language education?
- What form/function connections can inform technology for language education?
- What are successful practices in computer-assisted teaching of disciplinary language?
- How does the language teacher use technology to help meet the practical challenges of teaching language?
- How can students in a language class use technology to obtain useful models for and feedback on their language?
- How can technology help in assessing students' language learning?
- How can the analytic approaches from functional linguistic theories help teachers use technology to understand the challenges language presents to students?
- How can work in corpus linguistics and computational linguistics help to develop appropriate tools for teaching and learning language across the disciplines?

Proposal deadline: May 23, 2014
