Title: Book: Contemporary Approaches to Second Language Acquisition
Body: From http://benjamins.com/#catalog/books/aals.9/main Contemporary Approaches to Second Language Acquisition Edited by María del Pilar García Mayo, María Junkal Gutierrez Mangado and María Martínez Adrián Published by the John Benjamins Publishing Company Summary: Second language acquisition (SLA) is a field of inquiry that has increased in importance since the 1960s. Currently, researchers adopt multiple perspectives in the analysis of learner language, all of them providing different but complementary answers to the understanding of oral and written data produced by young and older learners in different settings. The main goal of this volume is to provide the reader with updated reviews of the major contemporary approaches to SLA, the research carried out within them and, wherever appropriate, the implications and/or applications for theory, research and pedagogy that might derive from the available empirical evidence. The book is intended for SLA researchers as well as for graduate (MA, Ph.D.) students in SLA research, applied linguistics and linguistics, as the different chapters will be a guide in their research within the approaches presented. The volume will also be of interest to professionals from other fields interested in the SLA process and the different explanations that have been put forward to account for it. Title: How to Teach Writing in Japanese using the Genre Approach: A Workshop for K-16 Teachers
Body: From http://www.indiana.edu/~easc/outreach/educators/cjk/Apr13/index.shtml How to Teach Writing in Japanese using the Genre Approach: A Workshop for K-16 Teachers April 27, 2013 IUPUI — Indianapolis Registration deadline: April 10, 2013 One of the Three modes of Communication highlighted by the National Standards is the Presentational Mode. Foreign language students utilize this mode of communication when they “present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.” In the target language, however, the focus of instruction at the elementary and intermediate levels of foreign language study is typically Listening and Speaking not Reading and Writing. Do you use a specific teaching approach to teach writing in Japanese? Have you ever wondered if your students are gaining Japanese writing skills as they progress in their learning? To guide our discussion of how to teach writing and to lead us in hands-on session, Indiana University and the Association of Indiana Teachers of Japanese are pleased to welcome Dr. Kazumi Matsumoto of the Modern languages and Classics Department at Ball State University.
