Title: 2013 National Japanese Examination
Body: From http://www.aatj.org/index.html The National Japanese Exam (NJE) was originally developed by NCJLT (National Council of Japanese Language Teachers) as a way for middle- and high-school students to test their Japanese skills and enjoy participating in a nation-wide exam with awards for high achievement. The NJE also helps teachers to see students’ strengths and weaknesses in certain areas. Teachers can use the results to give various school-level awards to students (from participation to gold level) and highlight the success of their Japanese programs. Taking the NJE can also serve as a preparation for students who will take the Japanese AP, IB or SAT tests in the future. The NJE is an entirely online test that teachers administer to students via a “Quia” platform provided by the American Association of Teachers of Japanese. In the spring of 2013, the National Japanese Exam will once again be offered for Level 2 (students having had 1 1/2 years of Japanese) and Level 3 (students having had 2 1/2 years of Japanese). Some changes have been made in the format of the test in order to make it more proficiency-based, standards-based and culture-related. Registration for the 2013 National Japanese Examination is open through February 8th. The exam must be administered between March 1 and April 1, 2013. For full details go to http://www.aatj.org/studentactivities/nationaljapaneseexam/index.html

Title: Exhibition and Symposium about Giacomo Puccini
Body: From http://arts.uchicago.edu/content/puccini-e-lucca-chicago-symposium The University of Chicago will host an exhibit and symposium exploring the life work of Giacomo Puccini, acclaimed opera composer of La bohème, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly, and many others. A celebratory symposium and reception are planned for Saturday, January 19, 2013, at 2-5 pm at the Logan Center. The concurrent exhibit, Puccini e Lucca a Chicago (Jan 15—Feb 17, 2013), tells the little-known story of Puccini’s strong attachment to his hometown of Lucca, located in Tuscany, Central Italy. Presented in printed panels and rotating digital slides, the exhibit presents never-before-seen photographs of Puccini and the places where he grew up and was formed into one of the best-loved names in opera. The narrative, presented in both English and Italian, deepens the opera-going public's understanding of what motivated one of the world’s most celebrated opera composers.
