Title: Book: Applied Linguistics and Materials Development
Body: From http://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/applied-linguistics-and-materials-development-9781441109439 Applied Linguistics and Materials Development Edited by Brian Tomlinson Published by Bloomsbury Publishing Description: Focuses for the first time on materials development and applications of current research and theory for the main areas of applied linguistics (e.g. second language acquisition, pragmatics, vocabulary studies). There are many books on applied linguistic theory and research and there are now a number of books on the principled development of materials for language learning, but this book takes a new approach by connecting the two concerns. Each of its chapters first of all presents relevant theories and research conclusions for its area and then considers practical applications for materials development. The chapters achieve these applications by reporting and commenting on current theory and research, by analyzing the match between current published materials and current theory and by suggesting and exemplifying applications of current theory to materials development. This will be an essential resource both for those studying or teaching materials development and for those studying or teaching applied linguistics. Title: Webinar: Reading Intervention for English Language Learners
Body: From http://tinyurl.com/bervkdv Reading Intervention for English Language Learners Tuesday, January 15, 2013 14:00 Eastern Standard Time English Language Learners have unique challenges, and not all come to the classroom with the same issues. Whether their native language has rules that conflict with those of English, or they are frustrated by the ambiguities of English, they require varied and systematic experiences in a safe learning environment to make a comfortable transition to English. Bob McMurray will describe the principles of Varied Practice, why they are applicable for teaching reading to ELL students, and show examples of using Varied Practice to teach reading. Marsha Allen will describe how the Santa Fe New Mexico schools have applied varied practice how it has worked so effectively, and how can you apply that knowledge to your district.
