Body: CFP: History, Philosophy, Tragedy a conference sponsored by USF Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies February 24, 2012 Tampa, Florida in conjunction with The American Foundation for Greek Language and Culture Annual Forum February 25, 2012 St. Petersburg College, Tarpon Springs Campus This conference will explore how historie, tragoidia, and philosophia were in fact, ways of extending—or contesting—the public debate that constituted Greek paideia in the fifth and fourth centuries. Justina Gregory, Sophia Smith Professor of Classical Languages and Literature at Smith College, will deliver the keynote address, “Tragedy as a Mode of Inquiry. Title: Call for Papers: Language, Literature, and Culture in Collegiate Foreign Language Education
Body: Not Your Grandma's German(ic Language) Class: Language, Literature, and Culture in Collegiate Foreign Language Education The Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin announces its 4th biennial Graduate Student Conference on Friday, March 2, 2012. We invite graduate students from all sub-disciplines in Germanic language departments to submit papers on ongoing research activities or pedagogical practices. We encourage proposals from a variety of fields that contribute to understandings of language use, language teaching and/or language learning, including foreign languages, education, communications, sociolinguistics, psychology, speech and hearing sciences, anthropology and sociology. Joint papers and cross-disciplinary proposals are welcome. Possible topics include: - The role of conversation analysis, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, and dialectology in FL learning - Innovative practices and course design in FLE - Didactization of literary texts for FL learners - Development of inter/transcultural competence - Changing professional roles and demands upon graduate students - Second Language Acquisition research - Impact of ACTFL proficiency guidelines and standards and 2007 MLA report on profession - Using linguistics/literature/cultural studies in the FL classroom - Teaching/learning reading, writing, listening and speaking in FLE - Incorporating technology into the FL classroom - Assessment in FLE Proposals for 20 minute presentations should be submitted as an e-mail attachment (PDF or Word DOC) to GerGradConference2012 at gmail dot com no later than November 1, 2011. Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/22/22-3443.html The University of Texas' Department of and Center for Middle Eastern Studies are pleased to announce that they will host the 2nd Annual Jīl Jadīd Conference, a graduate student conference in Arabic Literature and Linguistics, to be held at the University of Texas at Austin, February 23-25, 2012. Last February, graduate students from eighteen universities assembled to set the tone for Arabic studies in the twenty-first century. The purpose of this conference remains to bring together students spread across area studies, linguistics, comparative literature and other departments in order to facilitate a productive and interdisciplinary exchange of new ideas. The conference will feature keynote speakers on Arabic literature and linguistics, as well as a career development workshop offered by faculty from the UT Department of Middle Eastern Studies. Today it is organised by a team of volunteers. The featured theme of this year’s 3-day online conference is 'Serious games' and 'Situated Learning'. It hosts around 50 guest speakers and is attended by approx. 500 participants/ avatars. It takes place in Second Life on EduNation and on AVALON Learning and includes tours to other virtual worlds. To attend the sessions in Second Life, you need to have an avatar, a 3D representation, which is free. To get an avatar you need to sign up at http://secondlife.com All of the program will be streamed in Adobe ConnectPro, which is a webconferencing software which allows us to screenshare our desktops, almost like a virtual window to a virtual world. You do not need to have an avatar to attend a session in Adobe and you can watch and listen to the keynotes, panel discussions, plenaries, presentations, workshops, tours to educational sims, demo language lessons, theatre plays, dance performances, variety shows and even the party all from the comfort of an Adobe ConnectPro seat (max 100). Title: Professional Learning Community: Building a Heritage/Native Speaker Professional Learning Program

The PLC will read and evaluate current professional research articles, explore effective literacy strategies to address student learning needs, review established heritage/native speaker program models, determine a process to align a curriculum to the CA World Language Standards, and identify the components of a successful professional learning program. Enrollment is limited to 6 participants who have experience teaching heritage/native speakers. A small stipend will be paid to cover travel expenses. The first meeting will be Saturday, October 1, from 8:30 to 12:30 in Dwinelle Hall at UC Berkeley. Three additional meeting dates will be arranged by the group.
