Title: Resources for Introducing China Across the Curriculum
Body: From http://asiasociety.org China All Around Resources for Introducing China Across the Curriculum By Heather Clydesdale “Chinese language learning thrives best and has the greatest impact in schools when China is mentioned in other subjects as part of the curriculum,” contends Roberta Martin, Director of Asia for Educators at Columbia University. Even if a district does not teach Chinese language until the high school level, Martin and other curriculum developers say that student interest is sparked by introducing China in other subject areas at the elementary level and continuing to weave it into the curriculum through ensuing years. Martin, along with Clayton Dube, Associate Director of the U.S.–China Institute at the University of Southern California, and Rylan Sekiguchi, a curriculum specialist with the Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education (SPICE) assists teachers in this effort by producing China-related curricular materials that reach across subjects including social studies, language arts, science, math, arts, and crafts, as well as music and drama. Title: Book: Aspects of Spanish Pragmatics
Body: From http://www.peterlang.com/index.cfm?event=cmp.ccc.seitenstruktur.detailseiten&seitentyp=produkt&pk=53866&concordeid=310443 Aspects of Spanish Pragmatics by Domnita Dumitrescu Published by Peter Lang International Academic Publishers Summary: This collection of essays on Spanish pragmatics can be understood in its broadest sense in Iacob L. Mey's words as «the study of the conditions of human language use in a societal context.» The essays, which can be read independently from one another, revolve around three key areas within the Anglo-American school of pragmatics: speech acts, conversation, and politeness as sociocultural manifestations of communication. The first part of the book emphasizes the study of politeness in different Spanish-speaking communities, paying special attention to the realization of polite speech acts and their cross-cultural and cross-linguistic implications, as well as the face-work that interlocutors conduct in casual conversations and other communicative settings. The second part expands the topic of politeness strategies to the study of new contexts (such as echo questions and conversational repairs) and addresses other language phenomena that can be best explored from a pragmalinguistic perspective, such as evidentiality, mitigation, contrastive emphasis, and topicality and discourse salience. The examples (with the exception of a few literary quotes) proceed from naturally occurring data or were collected through questionnaires, and represent a wide range of colloquial «Spanishes,» from Peninsular to Latin American, from monolingual to bilingual, and from native to heritage to second language learners' varieties. The empirical nature of Aspects of Spanish Pragmatics will appeal to a wide range of readers interested in the use of Spanish for real-life communicative interactions, as well as in the topic of intercultural communication and the teaching of authentic language to students of Spanish in the United States. Title: ELL 'Shadowing' Brings Instructional Gaps to Light
Body: From http://www.edweek.org/tm/articles/2011/08/24/ell_shadowing.html ELL 'Shadowing' Brings Instructional Gaps to Light By Liana Heitin August 24, 2011 It's a professional development tool that stems from the concept of taking a walk in someone else's—in this case a student's—shoes. And in one California school, it has reportedly helped close the achievement gap for English-language learners. The technique, which second-language acquisition expert Ivannia Soto began using in 2003, is called ELL shadowing. A teacher or administrator follows an English-language learner to several classes. Neither the student nor his or her teachers know the real reason the observer in the back of the room is there, which is to look specifically at the student's use of academic language. The observer takes notes at five-minute intervals on the student's actions regarding listening and speaking. Soto, an associate professor of education at Whittier College in California, claims the process is "enlightening." Title: Book: Language Center Design
Body: From http://www.iallt.org/product/language_center_design_2011_edition Language Center Design, 2011 Edition Edited by Felix A. Kronenberg and Ute S. Lahaie Published by the International Association for Language Learning Technology Description: The authors of this publication showcase different scenarios of language center design and redesign. The first chapter is an overview of the center planning process. It is preceded by a useful check list. Chapter 2 explores the general theme of this volume: a shift from the more traditional language lab into a more open and less confined language center. The third chapter includes a discussion of K-12 language centers as well as the advantages of purchasing a “turn-key” system. Chapters 4 and 5 contain two case studies describing the transformation of a traditional language lab into a language center. The sixth chapter then takes on the challenges of designing and building a language center during times of rapidly changing technologies and finding a balance for virtual and physical spaces. The editor shares his own experiences after designing two new language centers at two different small liberal arts colleges in chapter 7. The final chapter deals with special spaces in language centers. Title: Book: The Role of Metalinguistic Awareness in the Effective Teaching of Foreign Languages
Body: From http://www.peterlang.com/index.cfm?event=cmp.ccc.seitenstruktur.detailseiten&seitentyp=produkt&pk=58781&concordeid=430280 The Role of Metalinguistic Awareness in the Effective Teaching of Foreign Languages by Anthony David Roberts Published by Peter Lang International Academic Publishers Summary: Attempts to explain children's ability to focus on language as medium rather than message have varied dramatically over the years. Studies in the field of metacognition have shown that this has a bearing on children's growing metalinguistic awareness. Conversely, children's ability to reflect upon and control their own use of language has been seen to have a bearing on the emergence of general metacognitive processes. However, significant differences have emerged not only in the interpretation of the research findings but also in the attempt to reconcile such findings with those of traditional anecdotal sources and to create more explanatory theoretical models. Starting with a critical review of the various theoretical approaches in the area of metacognition, this book explores in detail a socio-cultural approach, examining the origin, function and cognitive status of metalinguistic awareness. By elaborating and refining the analysis of writers such as Vygotsky in the light of new developments in relevant fields, the author also seeks to outline a model which can be applied to the pedagogic process. The book will be of interest to students and scholars of children's language development, applied linguistics and cognitive psychology, as well as to teachers of foreign languages at all levels.
