Title: Call for Papers: Teaching Language in the 21st Century
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/22/22-3427.html Teaching Language in the 21st Century Workshops on Teaching Foreign and Second Languages Co-hosted by the Departments of Romance Languages and Literatures and Learning and Instruction at SUNY University at Buffalo Saturday, February 25th 2012 The organizers encourage workshops pertaining to all second and foreign languages, including ESL, but they ask that workshops be conducted primarily in English for the benefit of all participants. Please consider ways in which you can help participants apply the content of your workshop to their own classrooms (especially in those classrooms focusing on languages other than your own specialty). Workshops should be interactive and offer the participants skills and activities that they can modify to fit their own teaching situation. Workshops will be 45 minutes in length and will be followed by a 15-minute question and answer period. Possible session topics include, but are not limited to: - L2 language skills such as listening, speaking, writing, reading, and cultural competence - L2 knowledge sets such as vocabulary, morphology, syntax, and pronunciation The deadline for workshop submissions is November 16th. See the full call for presentations at http://linguistlist.org/issues/22/22-3427.html

Title: Call for Articles: Special Issue of French Review
Body: The French Review welcomes articles for a Special Issue: Le français a-t-il un avenir aux États-Unis? This SPECIAL ISSUE, to be published in May 2013, will be devoted to professional issues, specifically the future orientation or, more starkly, the survival of French/Francophone studies in the United States. While the title is deliberately provocateur in tone, its intent is quite serious. The recent waves of budget cuts and program closures constitute new challenges for our discipline, challenges that call for an in-depth discussion among participants at all teaching levels. Relevant topics can include: new orientations for French/Francophone studies that would attract larger numbers of students; the connections between French/Francophone studies, business studies, social sciences, and other disciplines (journalism, engineering, etc.); the consequences of budget cuts at the K–12 and/or academic level(s); how best to proactively counter the threat of program eliminations; the development of French for professional purposes; the future of French/Francophone studies within the context of the general decline in funding for humanities programs. This issue will include a Témoignages section, in which teachers can submit shorter texts detailing the challenges they face as well as their success stories about thriving French programs. Deadline for submission: Aug. 1, 2012. See the website for more information: http://www.wwu.edu/depts/mcl/french/FR Fortune, T. [LIM-A] The French Review welcomes articles for a Special Issue. Title: Conference: History and Memory in Foreign Language Study
Body: From http://blc.berkeley.edu/index.php/blc/post/conference_history_and_memory_in_foreign_language_study Conference: History and Memory in Foreign Language Study Saturday, Sept.10, 2011 Berkeley The MLA Ad Hoc Committee on Foreign Languages (2007) has advocated teaching, together with functional language abilities, ‘critical language awareness’ and ‘historical and political consciousness’. Indeed, the many commemorative events in the cultures we teach as well as the many literary and non-literary texts we deal with in our language classes confront us with the necessity to refer to, explain, discuss the remembrance of historical events that our students are not familiar with. From which perspective should language teachers give these events significance? This colloquium is meant to initiate a critical dialogue between academic colleagues in the social sciences and in foreign languages. It will explore these issues from a theoretical and/or empirical perspective, and consider concrete pedagogical implications for the teaching and learning of foreign languages at the college level. This colloquium is free and open to the public. For full details go to http://blc.berkeley.edu/index.php/blc/post/conference_history_and_memory_in_foreign_language_study

Title: Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange Program
Body: From http://www.fulbrightteacherexchange.org The Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange Program provides opportunities for teachers to participate in direct exchanges of positions with colleagues from other countries for a semester or a year. Full-time U.S. teachers are eligible to apply for a year-long or semester-long direct exchange of teaching positions with a counterpart in another country teaching the same subject(s) at the same level.
