Title: Article: Fear of Bilingualism Is Part of U.S. Culture
Body: From http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/learning-the-language/2010/10/hakuta_fear_of_bilingualism_is.html Hakuta: Fear of Bilingualism Is Part of U.S. Culture By Mary Ann Zehr October 29, 2010 In the more than 30 years that Kenji Hakuta, an education professor from Stanford University, has been studying English-language learners, he's come to realize that many Americans are threatened by bilingualism, he said in at the seventh annual Brown Lecture in Education Research last evening. The lecture about equity in education is sponsored by the American Educational Research Association. "We don't need to be scared by bilingualism, although we probably will continue to be, because it's a cultural thing," said Hakuta. Title: Article: Science Grows on Acquiring New Language
Body: From http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2010/10/22/09window_ep.h30.html?tkn=SZLFGTpU3B4pzd3JR0U1yl339bVOC8/zE+Ln&cmp=clp-edweek Science Grows on Acquiring New Language By Sarah D. Sparks October 22, 2010 Recent studies on how language learning occurs are beginning to chip away at some long-held notions about second-language acquisition and point to potential learning benefits for students who speak more than one language. New National Science Foundation-funded collaborations among educators, cognitive and neuroscientists, psychologists, and linguists have started to find the evidence to back up the assertion that we can all learn a second language. For example, researchers long thought the window for learning a new language shrinks rapidly after age 7 and closes almost entirely after puberty. Yet interdisciplinary research conducted over the past five years at the University of Washington, Pennsylvania State University, and other colleges suggest that the time frame may be more flexible than first thought and that students who learn additional languages become more adaptable in other types of learning, too.
