Title: Article: The Linguistic and Cultural Renaissance of the Chumash People
Body: From http://www.actaonline.org/content/coming-home-linguistic-and-cultural-renaissance-chumash-people Coming Home: The Linguistic and Cultural Renaissance of the Chumash People On the dock, four paddlers stood with about two dozen friends, family, and members of a safety crew for a preparatory ceremony before they loaded into the tomol, a traditional Chumash canoe made from redwood planks strapped together and sealed with pitch. “It’s one thing that the tomol has done,” said Alan Salazar, who helped build the elye’wun in 1997 and has been present for every crossing. “It’s brought all Chumash together.” Hold on. Why, in a story about the revival of the Chumash language, am I talking about a canoe? Language, it turns out, is much like the glue of the culture. Said Steve Villa, Language Committee Chair with the Barbareño Chumash Council and a founder of Chumash Intertribal Singers, “The language is everything. With the language brings the people, and with the people you can think and see the world as your ancestors saw it.” Access the full article at http://www.actaonline.org/content/coming-home-linguistic-and-cultural-renaissance-chumash-people

Title: German Currents Filmfest in Los Angeles
Body: From http://www.goethe.de/ins/us/los/prj/ger/enindex.htm German Currents 2010 October 20th through 24th 2010 Preparation for the German Currents Filmfest are in full swing, the final line-up and guests have been announced and tickets are on sale already. Once again, the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles along with their partners, German Films, the American Cinematheque, Lufthansa, and Berlin & Beyond Film Festival / San Francisco are proud to present the fourth German Currents Showcase, featuring some of the best German films of the past year. This year the organizers selected a wide array of documentaries and feature films, from sweeping epics to intimate comedies. The movies cover powerful emotional topics from immigration, aging and abuse, to more light-hearted fare, such as the opening film When We Leave, the German Oscar® Entry for "Best Foreign Language Film" and the closing night film Vincent Wants to Sea, a German box-office hit with young adults. Furthermore, the organizers are proud to present the first German 3D animated film, Animals United, inspired by the famous book by Erich Kästner, plus the epic historical drama Pope Joan, based on the book by Donna Cross. After most of the screenings, filmmakers, actors and producers involved in the film will be on hand for a Q&A session.
