TitleBeginning of School Ideas, Part 1
Body
Another school year is beginning, and here are some resources and ideas to help you get off to a great start:

Are you hoping to incorporate more technology into your classroom? A blog article, 11 Techy Things for Teachers to Try This Year, is available at http://www.freetech4teachers.com/2010/08/11-techy-things-for-teachers-to-try.html

If you have enough room to move around, give them a sign-in sheet....stuff like: (these would be for Level one class)

Has eaten in a Mexican restaurant (not Taco Bell)
Can sing a song in Spanish
Knows who Alfonso Cuaron is
Knows who Oscar de la Hoya is
Can name a country that speaks Spanish that is NOT Mexico
Has a family member who speaks Spanish
Can say "I love you" in Spanish

Then go over these....tell them about your local restaurants that serve Mexican food.
Remind them of songs they know (or show them a video!)
Tell them that Cuaron directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
That de la Hoya is a famous boxer
And so on.....
I like to point out things in the community and have them start noticing aspects of the culture right away: billboards in the language, products they can buy in local stores, etc.

I give some M & M's and have them take a handful...organize them by color.... but not eat them right away. Then they have to write and/or speak in order to eat them.
For Level 3's it would be something like this: (I vary it from year to year.)
For RED they have to tell me something about themselves
YELLOW something they did over the summer
GREEN something about their family
BLUE something they want to do this year
BROWN is "student choice"

I might have them tell me the Reds (speaking to me)
Write down the Yellows (gives me a good idea how well they remember the past tenses) and hand it in.
Interview a partner about the Greens: Do you have a sister? (if the partner does, they can eat one green, etc. until they are out of green candies)
Write the Blues on the board, and so on....
