Program gives Chicago Public Schools teachers a lesson in history, culture

Last week, 25 Chicago Public Schools teachers took a whirlwind tour of multicultural Chicago, listening intently as members of different ethnic groups talked of their history, language and culture through the lens of their own experience.

Throughout the week, the teachers toured Chicago's Chinatown neighborhood, studied Mesoamerican creation myths at the National Museum of Mexican Art and heard powerful stories of immigration and integration by members of the Indian-American community at the Indo-American Heritage Museum in West Rogers Park.

"The idea is right," David Stovall, an assistant professor of policy studies in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, said of the CPS initiative. "Many times these stories have been excluded from textbooks and traditional academic resources, and they are important."
