Title: Article: St. John Regional's New FLEX Program
Body: http://www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/news/display.htm?StoryID=105630 St. John Regional's foreign language program a success By Marge Neal June 1, 2010 As St. John Regional Catholic School wraps up the first year of its new foreign language program, school officials are calling it a success. The school, which has offered Spanish to all students beginning in first grade, switched this year to a program called Foreign Language Experience, or FLEX. Students are exposed to a different language in grades five through eight. This year, fifth-graders studied sign language, sixth-graders learned Latin and Greek root words, seventh-graders studied Italian and eighth-graders got a taste of Chinese. School administrators changed their approach to foreign language after studying research that showed if less than 5 percent of weekly class time was being spent on foreign language instruction, a sampler program that provided an introduction to several languages would be more meaningful. Body: From http://www.nunatsiaqonline.ca/stories/article/98789_study_inuit_language_schooling_brings_long-term_benefits Study: Inuit language schooling brings long-term benefits With good base in Inuttitut, students do better SARAH ROGERS June 6, 2010 Long-term studies of school children in Nunavik show that students learn best and benefit from higher self-esteem when taught in their mother tongue. The findings mean Inuit students with a good base in Inuttitut tend to do better in their studies, says McGill psychology professor Don Taylor. These findings aren’t new — Taylor has been conducting research in Nunavik schools since the early 1980s— but they continue to play out in his continuing look at bilingual education. Title: Online Latin 1-4 AP at the SC Virtual School
Body: The South Carolina Virtual Schools Program is now offering Latin levels 1 CP, 2 CP, 3 Honors, and 4 Advanced-Placement. The classes generally run September-May, but another section of Latin 1 is now being offered January-August. We use the Cambridge Latin Series for the first three levels. The program is rigorous and students should expect to be actively involved in the course, including listening to podcasts and participating in class discussions with the instructor. For those teachers who cannot teach all levels of Latin or for students who do not have Latin at their schools, this is an excellent option. For more information about the Latin program, email Tracy Seiler at tseiler@mac.com. To register for classes, visit the SCVSP at their website: http://scvspconnect.ed.sc.gov
