Title: Article: Using Playtime to Make Your Baby Bilingual
Body: From http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703961104575226173575850984.html Using Playtime to Make Your Baby Bilingual By SHIVANI VORA May 6, 2010 A growing number of companies are offering classes, DVDs and play groups that teach babies and toddlers foreign languages. The idea is to offer instruction using fun settings, images and songs to make language engaging. We tried four foreign-language programs that target toddlers. The Language Workshop for Children was in a structured classroom setting; Little Pim and Muzzy BBC Language Course for Children taught through DVDs; and Hola, a Playgroup in Spanish, taught using a play-time setting. The tester was our 23-month daughter, and we chose Spanish for her to learn. We didn't test the programs' long-term effect, but instead judged the products for what they offered and how well they captured our toddler's attention. Body: The Second Language Content Panel has just completed the 2010 review and revision of the Second Language Content Standards. This process began in February of 2009 and has resulted in a document we hope will better inform second language instruction in the State of Oregon. The next step in this process is “Public Review and Comment”. At this time we are asking second language teachers and other stakeholders to look at the new standards document and give feedback. If you would like to participate in this review please go to http://www.ode.state.or.us/teachlearn/subjects/secondlanguages/standards/second-language-all-in-one.pdf to access the document and review questions. Title: International Competitiveness and Education: A Conversation with Arne Duncan
Body: From http://www.cfr.org/publication/22231/international_competitiveness_and_education.html International Competitiveness and Education: A Conversation with Arne Duncan Speaker: Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education Moderator: John DeGioia, President, Georgetown University May 26, 2010, Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. Council on Foreign Relations “The United States is a country made up of many cultures, and we often celebrate that diversity. “But just as often, we rely on the predominance of English as the language of global business and higher education when looking towards the world. “This reliance can put us at a disadvantage. We haven't been compelled to meet our global neighbors on their own terms and learn about their histories and values and viewpoints. And I'm worried that in this interconnected world, our country risks being too disconnected from the contributions of other countries and cultures.” Read the full transcript at http://www.cfr.org/publication/22231/international_competitiveness_and_education.html Read a related article at http://asiasociety.org/education-learning/policy-initiatives/national-initiatives/us-secretary-education-global-learning-la or another full text version at http://www2.ed.gov/news/speeches/2010/05/05262010.html

Title: e-Dictionary of Taiwan’s Indigenous Languages
Body: From http://focustaiwan.tw/ShowNews/WebNews_Detail.aspx?ID=201005310035&Type=aEDU e-dictionary preserves dying indigenous languages, cultures By Lee Hsien-feng and Deborah Kuo May 31, 2010 An e-dictionary of the languages and cultures of Taiwan's indigenous people has been compiled to help preserve indigenous mother tongues and collective memories that are quickly dying out, the Ministry of Education said Monday. The MOE urged people, particularly Taiwan's aborigines, to take advantage of the e-dictionary, which can be found on the Web site http: //citing.hohayan.net.tw/default.asp . The ministry said the reference work would help users reinforce, learn or revive these dying languages and cultures before it is too late. It covers the mother tongues of 14 indigenous mountain tribes and the Pingpu plains (low-lying areas) aborigines. The e-dictionary also has sections on 16 cultural subjects, including religions and worship, myths and legends, social organizations and functions, languages and philology, archeological sites and relics, and history.
